Missy M,
My dog has the same problem but we found a really good sollution. Our first methoed was when ever she started sniffing we put her on some newpaper. She didn't do so well with that. Then our friends gave us some potty pads for puppies. She got very good at those. Remember these are all in the house! Then we put the potty pad outside and she got very well at using those. The way we could tell she had to go is was she'd sniff all around the house. Then we got rid of the potty pad and she is awesome! Still a few accidents but she is very good! After she eats take her out right away! Also after she has taken a nap or has played a lot take her to go to the bathroom! Good luck potty training! I also found some good tips on potty training at www.puppiesposted.com! Check it out! Also what kind of dog do you have? That might have an impact!

Put the pee pee newspapers at the door and bring the dog to the papers every twenty minutes for the first day. Then you bring the pee pee newspapers slowly outside the door till your puppy gets the idea that she or he must do his business outside. Another thing, in the morning the first thing you must do is leash your puppy and bring her outside to do her business immediately; when she does, praise her and bring her in. Also the dog could be crated at night, and then in the morning, take her out immediately. A dog will never make where they sleep. Also clean up any urine or doo doo stains that are on your rugs. Go to pet store and ask for something that will definitely remove any odor as the puppy will keep going back to these spots. Also walk your puppy at least three times a day for twenty minutes. It is very important.

DON'T use any kind of pads, paper ext...... It confuses them
One of the best ways to train a puppy is with rewards.
Take him/her outside... IF they go potty make sure you give them a treat with in 3-5 seconds of them going. OR you could even give them a treat WHILE they're going. YES I said while.
Animals are smart, and they will remember "treats" cause they like them. If you start to give them their rewards when or immediately after they do something YOU want them to, they will soon learn to do this all the time.
IF they go in the house and look at you wanting a treat, pick them up and put them out side right away.
I should also ask where you keep them during the day if you're not at home?
What ever you do, DON'T let them claim the whole house. Keep them locked up. I know it sounds bad but it's not. They're pets not kids.
I suggest a small area like a create or a carrier. Yes I know it seems small, but you'll thank me for it in the long run. Most dogs will NOT potty where they sleep. Would you want to lie in your own crap? So if you keep them in tight (but not to tight) areas you'll find it much easier to just come home and take them out immediately. They will go since they haven't all day, and then you can reward them, and they will learn.
Watch for the sings.... After playing, eating or a nap... get them out right away. 9 times out of 10 after all of these they will have to go.
But the biggest thing is consistency!!! You need to keep doing the same thing over and over, and don't stop or change. This will not only throw your little one off, but you'll have a much harder time training an older dog then if they're still young.

Read the books and ask your vet and or trainers. You should not even try to train a pup till at least 3 to 4 months when he will understand what is expected of him. Come on, its a 8 week old pup. You can get him into a routine if you wish but don't expect much till he is a little older. Be patient.
Dogs can be house broke a lot quicker than kids can be potty trained but we still want them to be broke immediately?
Try to put yourself in that puppies place...Try to understand him. He will mature and you will get him trained but now is to young.

8 weeks - he is still quite young.
to break the dog, we have crate trained. when the dog sleeps place him in the crate. the crate needs to be as small as possible, but still allows him to turn around a lay down. dogs do not like to get their mess on themselves, so he wont go in his "den" At this age, he should be let out every few hours. take him straight outside, on a leash, to the place where you want him to do his business. this will become his regular spot. Also take him to this spot about 15 minutes after eating. each time you go out with him. stay out with him until he goes, no matter how long it takes. never punish the dog for peeing in the house. he doesnt know any better at this point.

She needs to set up a schedule for the puppy. She should take it out after it eats and stay with it for a few minutes. After 10 minutes, she should bring it back in. She should wait and watch it for signs that it wants to go and take it out immediately, then praise it when it does go outside.
It takes a lot of time and patience to train a puppy and she has to be consistent with the training.

The dog is 8 WEEKS OLD, your question is the answer. Please have your friend read up on house breaking using positive reinfrocement. Swatting the dog for accidents will just make him find hidden place to go. If the dog doesn't go outside, put him in his crate when you bring him in (read up on crate training), wait 10-30 mins, and then take him outside again. Reward him when he goes out side. when he starts to go in the house, interupt him and walk him outside . Use and ENZYMATIC cleaner when he has accidents in the house. Good luck.

She needs to go out with the puppy and watch till the deed is done and then give him the good doggy love and then take him inside. Puppy=work, consistency and love.
