If you have an altar make sure there that it is set and that you have cleared the space with either sage or any incense with the intention of clearing negativity. Other than that, they want to be treated with respect but most gurus/lamas have a pretty good sense of humor so I would be kind and also be myself. You might inquire if there is something special they would like or if there are foods they don't eat for spiritual or dietary reasons.

Today is Guru Puja day! You could present a bowl of precious gems filled to the top, one thousand kinds of incense, gold and silver, all of the auspicious items in a thousand realms, all of your money and possessions, your house, every kind of precious substance, herbs and spices, fresh flowers of one hundred million varieties, ten million rose petals at the Guru's feet, food for the whole sangha for one or two months and every kind of wealth in the whole of fifty million buddhaverses and the merit would not be nearly as much as simply folding your hands in reverence and offering your sincere and heartfelt gratitude for being shown how to practice. Practice. That is the best offering. Sincere and honest practice.

My wife is Hindu. Her family belong to Sadhu Vaswani mission. Dada J. P. Vaswani visited the houses of her two brothers and her sister over the years. They sang bhajans, burned incense, and had a large picture of his predecessor Sadhu T. L. Vaswani with a flower garland on it. Once they had a ritual fire in the house, but the fire alarm went off, so they didn't do that again. I think he may have blessed the houses by breaking a naryal (coconut) at the main entrance, so they had to have a naryal ready before he came. I guess it depends on the traditions associated with the particular guru.
