It is a two way thing.Technology helps reach people you would have never had a chance to meet. You have become your own signal operator, postperson and telegraph master.
That being said, people who are nice will contact you all the time. Also include the people who hate you.
Trust me this is not easy , I being a person with high email contacts, YM`s , two mobiles and one land line.Perhaps I have all these contacts in the urge to get a soul mate which society failed to deliver.I also have a burgeoning hobby getting another set of pals spread across Europe and the USA.So you need technology but you have to learn to have offlimits time.
I have told myself once I get hitched I will stop contacts.

I think someone who feels that way needs to try and sort out everything systematically and analyse the things they use mostly and see if they truly need to use some of them - if they see redundancy and they have more important things to do (could be websites themselves too) then they need to decide if they should crop them or just allot some kind of priority hierarchy so they could manage their own hobbies and (just maybe) real life stuff too.
