0.3 or 0.4 are usually around alcohol poisoning to death. The highest I have heard of without dying is in the upper .3's.

I arrested a DUI in 1981 with a BAC of .36, and arrested a pedestrian for DIP (Drunk In Public) in 1988 with a BAC of .42. The DIP guy almost died on the way to the hospital, and was in Intensive Care for a week.
The BAC level at which death can take place is .50%.

Up in a suburb of Detroit a couple of years ago...some guy plowed into the car containing the wife and sons of a guy one of my doctors worked with...they died instantly...the guy didn't, but his BAC was well over .4. Same thing happened in Toledo last year. The guy driving had a very high BAC, but wasn't killed while the people he slammed into were. It's really not typical for someone to have a BAC that high and not be totally unconscious.

a police reported BAC of 0.42 after he was found passed out over the wheel of his car in the middle of a large intersection. This was not his first DUI conviction. That passed out person was found by a rookie cop who messed up the technical DUI aspects of his arrest. But the suspect got nailed for a laundry list of other of offenses.

I have worked in a dispatch and jail setting for 23 years. Shortly after I started, a man was booked in, was walking fine but staggered a little. His alcohol level was .52, the highest I have seen.

I read something in the news a few years back where the guy was .9, not .09. they picked him driving and the only reason they knew was from the smell and he ran a stop sign. otheriwse, walking and talking fine. I can be at .06 and drive like pure ****. the system is flawed.
heres another one below.

.4 is usually the "unconscious" point for BAC
that said, a friend of mine blew a .44 after he wrecked his car MANY years ago. in fact, he was walking back down the road when the cops pulled up. they couldn't figure out how he was still conscsious at that level, let alone walking somewhere.

I had a kid "blow" a .2 ish...
if course, we were folding his lips around the breathalyser...
We actually found him alone, mostly passed out, in a hay field. He was a fun patient though, screaming, "I HATE COPS!" and when we told him that we weren't cops, he proclaimed, "I HATE YOU TOO!"
Oh to be a fireman!
