Sorry - I'm going to have give you a dissenting opinion here.

Every person on this planet is doing damage. It doesn't matter HOW much of a good little environmentalist they are or have the potential to become because every single individual is a consumer.

I decided 20 years ago that this planet was in too much of a mess for me to consider having a child. I coudn't, in all consciousness, be responsible for another consumer who was going to live and eat their way through something in the order of $250 000 worth of resources in the first 18 years of their lives.

As well as that, it's all very well and good to say that my child, if given the proper education, may be the next great environmentalist or Nobel prize winner. But most (not all) children tend to do the opposite to their parents, don't they? I decided that scenario was too risky.

Do an ecological footprint calculation on yourself, then double it for every child you have. Is that "no effect"? I think not!!!

THE most intensely responsible and ethical act ANY caring citizen on the planet can achieve right now is to stop procreating. We humans are the cause of ALL the environmental problems which this plant faces. ALL of them, bar none. Another child will simply exacerbate the problem and it's only through educating ourselves to this truth that the planet has any hope of long - term viability in my humble opinion.

Love and Light,

Jarrah

It depends on how you raise it. If you teach it good environmentally-responsible ways of living (consume less resources, respect wildlife, don't litter, etc.) then it would probably be good for the environment. A well-brought up and well-educated child could teach others what it has learned and be an asset to his/her community and world.

If the child is brought up without any respect for the earth and its resources, he/she would be a detriment to the environment.

If people were just more responsible and made a few minor changes in their lifestyles, the earth would be so much better off. Since you're considering your actions before you take them, I'd say you'd be more fit than most to bring a child into the world.

Having one more child causes no environmental destruction. Who's to say that this particular child may not be the one to discover a cure for cancer, find a perfect alternative to carbon fuels, or solve world food production problems?

Ask the alternative question : How much good can one more child do to environmental protection ? Children are now more environmental sensitive due to the education they get. It is the one whole generation of misguided adults that is causing the damage to environment.

Do you mean if one person has one more, or if every couple on earth has one more? For the former, none. For the latter, horrendous.
