Well my first language is Spanish and i learned Portuguese in college. Since both come from the romantic european languages they're both very similar, both in grammar and phonetics. I personaly like Spanish better, i think it's a nicer language but that's just my opinion, portuguese is a beautiful language too. I think portuguese is a little more complicated though, than spanish, when it comes to the pronounciation of words, unlike spanish, you don not pronounce as it's exactly written (at least for a lot of words) the sound changes from the exact written letters. Hope this helps, and hope you have fun learning which ever one you choose.
p.s. depending on the reason you might want to learn the language just remember that spanish is the second most spoken language in the world after English, so you might be able to use it more often than portuguese. Especially here in the United States, which in the end might be good practice for you.

Unless you are chiefly rationale on residing in or mostly touring both Brazil or Portugal, where case be taught Portuguese, then be taught Spanish. Spanish is a global language and is spoken in nations around the globe. It may be a essential language in industry and trade and in addition many folks understand Spanish as a moment or 3rd language. Also, in case you do become studying a fourth language as good, might I advise that you simply recollect French and German earlier than Portuguese? Both French and German are once more essential industry languages and can by and large aid you greater than Portuguese.

I know both languages, but I can tell you that learning portuguese will me much more easier first because you won't have to deal with the many types of slangs spanish you can learn from the many countries that speak spanish.
They are very similar but depending on the Spanish you learn from it will change the prespective of the words in portuguese. Brazilian portuguese and Portugal portuguese might be off by a bit. But then Spanish well be a lot easier later on.

It depends entirely on what you want to do with the language once you have learnt it. If you intend to travel to or in Spanish speakiong countries, then, clearly, Spanish will be your logiocal choice, and vice versa. Otherwise it really makes no difference; one advantage is that Spanish and Portuguese have much in common and learning one will help learn the other - to a limited extent.

If you're in the USA, take Spanish first. There are many more opportunities to learn Portuguese faster if you know Spanish first. Most universities offer Portuguese for Spanish Speakers as a course (I've never seen a course that teaches the opposite).

spanish & portuguese are very differently languages, and therefore, there is little to be gained (with respect to time) by learning either "first."
it depends on what you will be using the languages for (are you travelling to portugal or brazil? then learn portuguese first, as that will be the national language there.).

My opinion is Spanish. It is an easy language to learn especially if u hv English. Portuguese is more complicated and not THAT similar to Spanish. the two languages r quite different. Spanish is easier... but I wld learn Portuguese first...
The advantage to learning Spanish first is that it is used in more countries.
hmmmm. I still think pick Portuguese first.
where is the bus? English
_ onde est barra-? _ Portuguese
¿Dónde está el autobús? Spanish
Hello, what is your name? English
hello, que est seu nome? Portuguese
¿hola, cuál es su nombre? Spanish
Not that similar....
