most Amish still speak the language their ancestors spoke when they came to America. They still dress much the same way, and live the same way. They do not use electricity, automobiles, telephones, or most of our modern technology due to a belief that the simple life is better (and in many ways, they're right!).

They do use fiberglass insulation in new buildings, indoor plumbing, gas lights, and a few other modern additions that the elders have judged acceptable to tradition.

Women (and men) are expected to wear head coverings (hats or caps) whenever outside, and beards are grown on the men only after they marry. Children are taught for grades 1-9 in Amish only schools, and go to public schools only durring the high school years.

Amish women wear face clothes? Are you even awake or even know one thing about the Amish? You are very mistaken, Amish do not wear "face clothes".

Do not bash the Amish, they have more morals and respect than anyone in the USA. Learn something from them, they will teach you much on life.

I'm not sure what you mean by asking if it is "right".

I have no problem with the Amish choosing to dress VERY conservatively or having the particular beliefs that they do about women's roles and men's roles. I'm not about to tell them that they *have to* wear what's on the cover of Vogue magazine, or cut their beards, or have television or...well, anything else.

On the other hand, I'm not about to let the Amish, or any other group, impose their chosen, voluntary restrictions onto our American society as a whole.

You can choose to home school your kids so that they only learn what you want them to know...you can choose to belong to a religious body that segregates men and women...you can choose to never use contraceptives....in other words, you can choose not to take advantage of some of the freedoms that are allowed by American society.

But you cannot go into another church and tell them that they have to seat men and women separately, you cannot tell other parents that they *have to* teach their kids "Intelligent Design", you cannot tell other people that they cannot use contraceptives, you cannot bring back the Miscegenation Laws...

These things are in the area of our personal choice, and our private lives...

I don't know what youj mean by "face clothes." Are you talking veils? Some Muslim women and Michael Jackson's kids wear veils, but I never heard of Amish women doing that.

I don't understand why anyone should care what someone else wears. There a plenty of real problems in the world, why should we worry about things that don't hurt anybody? As long as somebody isn't wearing T shirts that say "Death to Jews" or something; people should be able to wear whatever they damn well please.

I lived next door to Amish for five years. They do keep the no technology thing going. They dress very modestly and plainly. They always wear some type of hat, both men and women (but I think that varies).

They do not cover their faces.

If America believes in freedom of religion, then the Amish can keep their ways

The Amish are hard working people who are good members of the community and bother no one. It would be a shame to see their way of life die out.

Amish women cover their hair, not their faces.

I like the Amish. Plus, I'm really impressed that they keep their traditions alive when they're surrounded by people who live so differently from them.
