This is the recipe that I use- it's a bit fiddly, but worth it when it's finished!
8oz plain dark chocolate, cut into small pieces,
4oz unsalted butter,
1/4 pint milk,
8oz light muscovado sugar,
2tspn vanilla essence,
2eggs-separated,
1/4 pint soured cream,
8oz self raising flour,
1tspn baking powder.
Filling +topping,
4tbspns seedless raspberry jam,
4tbspns Brandy,
14 oz plain dark chocolate, cut into small pieces,
7oz unsalted butter,
1 quantity Chocolate ganache,
plain chocolate curls,to decorate.
Ganache:-enough for a nine inch cake.
8oz plain chocolate
8oz double cream.
melt these together over a low heat, pour into a bowl and leave to cool, then whisk until it holds its shape.
Preheat oven to 180C/350F/G4. grease and base line a 9 inch springform tin. Melt chocolate, butter and milk in a pan and stir until smooth, remove from heat and beat in sugar and vanilla-leave to cool slightly.
Beat egg yolks and cream in a bowl, then add to chocolate mixture til smooth.Sift flour and baking powder and fold in.
Whisk eggwhites until stiff. Stir in 2tbspns into the chocolate cake mixture to lighten it. Fold in the rest of the egg whites, using a metal spoon.
Scrape mixture into prepared tin and bake for about 45-55 mins or until firm to the touch. Cool in tin for 15 mins, then invert onto rack, remove tin and leave until cold.
Slice cake across middle into 3 even layers. Make the filling. In small pan warm the raspberry jam with 1tbspn Brandy, then brush over the cake layers, leave to set.
Place remaining Brandy in a pan with the chocolate and butter, heat gently, stirring until smooth, pour into a bowl and cool until it thickens.
Spread the bottom layer of the cake with half the chocolate filling, top 2nd layer-jam side up and spread the remaining filling.Top with final layer and press slightly.
Leave to set, then spred the top and sides with the ganache, decorate with chocolate curls and dust over with cocoa powder.
This cake is very rich, but Mmmmmm good! Serves 16-20, if they're lucky, lol!

This is an awesome cake, and if you don't want to use the Cool Whip, you can use the Killer Chocolate Sauce recipe.
DEATH BY CHOCOLATE CAKE
1 chocolate chip cake mix
1 chocolate instant pudding mix (prepare according to box)
1 lg. container Cool Whip
2-3 tbsp. Amaretto
2 Heath candy bars (opt.)
Hershey's chocolate syrup
Prepare cake according to package directions, but bake in a 10" spring form pan (2 - 9" pans can be used). Bake in 350 degree oven for 40 to 45 minutes, testing to see when baked. Cool and release from pan. When cake is thoroughly cool, split in half. Sprinkle bottom layer with Amaretto and put all of chocolate pudding on middle layer. Place about 1/3 of the Cool Whip on top of pudding. Put top layer on, cut side up. Sprinkle with Amaretto. Cover with remaining Cool Whip. Drizzle with Hershey's chocolate syrup. As the optional, candy bars can be shaved and placed on top of Cool Whip on both layers. If you use 9" pans, you do not split layers. Use the flat side of the cakes for filling and Cool Whip.
KILLER CHOCOLATE SAUCE:
3 tbsp. unsalted butter
4 oz. unsweetened chocolate
2/3 c. boiling water
1 1/2 c. sugar
7 tbsp. corn syrup
1 tsp. vanilla
Melt the butter and chocolate in a heavy saucepan over low heat; add boiling water and stir well. Mix in the sugar and corn syrup, until sauce is smooth. Boil the sauce, without stirring for 10 minutes; remove from heat; cool 20 minutes, then add the vanilla. Spoon the sauce over the Death by Chocolate Cake.

Death by Chocolate Cake:
Ready in: 30-60 minutes
Serves/Makes: 12
Ingredients:
1 package chocolate cake (or devils food)
1 six pack skor bars or heath bars, frozen
1 big tub cool whip
2 packs chocolate mousse (I use Jello's chocolate silk)
Directions:
Put skor/heath bars in freezer Make mousse. Chill for 1 hour (or follow the directions) Bake cake. Let cool. Make sure cool whip is thawed.
Crush Skor bars in a ziploc bag.
Then, once your ingredients are ready, you can begin putting it together: line the bottom of a transparent bowl with the chocolate cake.
Next, line with chocolate mousse. Next, line with cool whip. Next, line with most of the crushed Skor bars.
Then, start all over again, with the exception of just sprinkling the Skor bars on top to make it look decorative! and wall-la! That is your death by chocolate.

I have THE recipe for Death by Chocolate
Ingredients
24 oz. dark [dark as you like] chocolate
2 sticks unsalted butter
2/3 cups heavy cream
6 whole extra large eggs
Method
Preheat oven to 425°
Melt the butter and 16 oz. of the chocolate in a double boiler. Warm 6 eggs in hot water in a separate pan. Coat a 9" spring form pan with butter. Wrap the pan in foil to make it watertight. Beat the eggs whole until they are fluffy. Slowly fold the melted butter and chocolate in to the eggs. Place the mixture in the spring form pan. Place the pan in a larger pan and pour in warm water until it is half – way up the pan.
Bake for 5 minutes. Cover with foil and continue baking for another 10 minutes. Pour on the topping [recipe follows]. Refrigerate. Serve.
Topping
Method
Scald 2/3 cups of heavy cream in a sauce pan. Remove from heat. Immediately add 6 oz. of finely chopped dark chocolate. Cover and let stand for five minutes. Stir until smooth. Test the topping by stirring. It is ready when a drop "mounds" before disappearing into the mixture.
If it is too thick – thin with warm liqueur [Cointreau or Framboise or Frangelico].
If it is too thin, add more chocolate, re – heat and test it again.

I made some modifications to this recipe to make it low fat. I used Fat free pudding & Cool whip. I also found a low fat brownie mix & then used a low carb candy bar. It was delicious

I don't have one handy but I did remember googling it ages ago and coming up with several recipe options; I googled it again just now and there are loads of hits/recipes, if you want to take a look at any of them:
http://www.google.com/search?q=recipe+%22death+by+chocolate%22&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1
FWIW, I glanced the at the first death by chocolate recipe at allrecipes.com and although there weren't many reviews, they were all raves. There are also several other receipes for the dessert on that site. (For some reason the link isn't working when I paste it here, but it's the second hit from google.)
Good luck and enjoy!
