It seems a lot of the 'Athiests' on here use the term as mostly an excuse to bash religious people.
Now I myself used to 'claim' to be an Athiest, then when I truly thought about it, I now see myself as an Agnostic.
I cannot beleive for 1 second that although there may not be a 'God' as such, there cannot be a greater power either.
Just a thought... carry on...

That is completely innacurate...
Not beleiving in God does not urgo make you an Athiest.
Agnostic and Athiest is not splitting hairs either... there is a large difference.
Athiest totally deny the existance of a God or higher power.
Agnostics beleive that is it impossible to know either way in this life...
Dictionary.com says it all
Athiest - someone who believes that God or gods do not exist
Agnostic - someone who does not know, or believes that it is impossible to know, whether a god exists

My religion in inherently atheistic however I have a faith. This certainly does complicate things, because I do not worship or accept the existence of a Deity in the traditional sense.
I don't believe that Atheists are overly misguided. In fact I find most of the self proclaimed atheist have grown up in a religious setting and have completely rejected their faith.
Most educated people can distinguish between agnostic and atheists. Often atheism is used to bash religion, just as religious groups on here will attach each other.
Religion is often little more than a collection of ideas we are willing to fight and kill for.

I claim agnosticism, but in reality am closer to an atheist. The only reason I considder myself agnostic is that we haven't accessed all available knowledge.
However, philosophically, I am an Atheist, because I cannot justify the existence of God as explained by any religion. There are too many inconsistencies, and he would be a cruel brute to allow some of the things that happen, happen.

So you think that someone would deny a god that they know is real and risk eternal damnation for the jokes? That is pretty delusional. We really don't believe there is a god. Sorry to break it to you.
Given the negative image that we have it is far more likely the other way. People who say they are believers just to keep you guys off their backs. I know several like that, who when you speak out will pull you aside and tell you they agree but would never tell anyone.

I am an Athiest. I honestly believe there is no god, no higher power. All there is is science. How much of the universe we'll ever work out, I don't know but as far as I'm concerned there is no God.

I agree with you, for years I called myself Athiest and now I refer to myself as Agnostic. while I really do not believe in 'God' in the sense of the bible and everything that we are taught from a young age, I do want to believe that there is more out there than just stars, planets and universe.
Not everyone who I meet who says they are athiest or agnostic truly knows what they mean until we discuss it.

I can tell you trully............an agnostic I am not.
You can usually tell through peoples answers and questions where they stand.
From what I can tell, most ateists on this site are genuine.
And we don't want to "bash christians", it's the christianity itself that we have a problem with, especially the fundamentalist christian kind.
Hey, I've a problem with buddhism and every other religion too.
It's nothing personal, I just think that belief in God is one of the main problems faced by the human race in it's quest to be civilised.

Er, no. I've never seen that, and neither have you.
People sure are bothered by the existence of atheists, aren't they? You're all scared to death of us - you deny our existence, claim that we secretly believe, and make up all sorts of tall tales about our behavior. Doesn't that tell you something about the quality of your beliefs? It should.

More people that are atheists don't or won't admit it than those who do. It is still hard for some people to accept the true possibility that there is no god / gods than speak out against the indoctrination of centuries.

I am an agnostic but I sometimes claim to be an atheist simply because I can not be bothered explaining the difference.
So I would guess that a portion of the people who claim to be atheists are actually agnostics

Yeah but what defines a greater power? Is an alien with better technology a greater power? Would you worship him if you found out he created all of us through science? I'm really not mocking or being sarcastic. I'm genuinely interested in what you think.
