Penicillin, a mould naturally secretes inhibitors to bacterial growth. It does this for its own benefit, but we are able to make use of it. This substance binds to the enzyme that helps make bacterial cell walls and this weakens the cell wall of the bacterium when it multiplies. If cell walls are improperly made cell walls allow water to flow into the cell causing it to burst.
