when you cry - your body is releasing chemicals (toxins). those chemicals are called Endorphines. Endorphines get ramped up in moments of high emotion - be it joy, sorrow, fear, anger etc. when you cry, you're getting rid of those things. so, once you've gotten rid of them, you feel much better.
which is why crying is manifested through several emotions. you can cry when you're happy, sad, afraid, angry etc. you don't laugh when you're angry or afraid. you laugh when you're happy. but you can cry almost anytime.
it's one of those things in life that you don't always understand why they are, but you're glad they're there.

I hardly ever cry but know what you mean! The trouble with me is that it totally drains me and makes me ill the next day...hence I try not to get upset!!
