I think that to give a child that much leeway is wildly irresponsible. The other day a kid of six or seven threw a glass of water at my table- and the dad just giggled nervously and avoided my eyes while the mother whined "You'll go in time out if you do it again"- Which to me is just like an invitation to the kid. What's going on with the kids setting the rules these days?

Because we now live in a child-oriented society. Social morays dictate that it is more important to respect the freedoms and rights of children than it is to support adults freedom to punish and discipline.

It didn't used to be this way. Twenty years ago, if a child acted out of order in a public place, the parents would spank the child properly, and other parents would either agree with this or not interfere. Today, if the same situation occurred, other parents and adults would think wither the parent is being mean, or would scream child abuse!

It's gotten way out of hand, but unfortunately it will only get worse.

If my daughter had done that (she is 3 1/2), I would not only have made her apologize, but I would have had her clean it up and then take her out of the restaurant....period. And everyone is right, it is getting to where a lot of us are afraid to discipline our children. You use a time out, then plant them in a time out! Put their nose in a corner! Give them a few swats on the butt! But not doing anything when they misbehave is also abuse. It was irresponsible. And it teaches the child that they do not have to respect anyone.

I as a parent do not use threats . I was not brought up that way ,If I were the parent of that child he would have been told to appologize on the spot and Would have been taken away from the table to isolation for a bit and I would have made him help with the clean up , And sent to bed!!!

as a parent of 3, let me apologise on their behalf and assure you that if that had been one of mine they would have been made to apologise to you, then either taken home or if in middle of dinner ,been placed in car or similar until i was ready to go.
parents like that give the rest of us a bad name.
time out only works if used effectively, consistently and appropriately.
my kiddies can sit in a restaurant and behave properly, a few grumbles if food a long time, but they take books/game boys/pencils/toy etc to help keep occupied, or one of us takes them for a walk whiclst the other waits at table.
manners are easy to obtain and keep, if the parents can be bothered and not be so 'pc' that they disappear up their own bottoms and ruin tehri children!!
next time, sit next to us!! lol

omg i know exactly what you mean, i am a server at og and i am shocked sometimes at how parents let their kids behave, i am embaressed for them at times, its crazy, i have a two year old and he behaves better than some of the 5-10 year olds i have seen bc he knows if he does not behave then we dont go out again, these parents just seem to let the kids be in control instead of themselves.

Parents today either forgot what it was like when we grew up or they're just so scared of all these laws that tell us disciplining our children is equal to abuse...we need to stop letting politically correct politicians tell us what we can and cannot do. I discipline my son according to my rules, and trust me, the only rules are MY rules!

That is irresponsible as hell. I would NEVER allow my daughter to act that way, in public or at home. These parents need to get control of these kids before its too late.

I think parents today are getting more afraid to discipline their children or say the wrong thing cause they think they child might turn out bad, but if they leave it alone, that might happen anyways.

They are not comfortable with themselves and therefore they project their inadequacies onto their children and then they become inadequate adults, just like their parents and until the cycle is broken, it will continue.
