hanging doesn't hurt at all.in fact there is a scientifis basis to hanging. if you are familiar with anatomy you know that the odontoid process of the second cervical vertebra(axis) is lodged in the vertebral canal of the first cervical vertebra(atlas) through which the spinal cord also passes. both these are situated in the neck region. when one is hanged the process of the axis turns and crushes the spinal cord in the vertebral canal at the level of atlas thus immediately cutting of the brain from the body and killing you instantaneously.

I think that when you got your scientific explantation from one of the answerers they forgot to mention a few critical elements. first. the rope must be carefully positioned behind the left ear of the person and secured there. if not then it will not snap the neck. second, the breaking of the neck requires you to fall a specific distance, which is calculated by the weight of the person being hung. if the rope is to short you will feel it, in fact you can live for a good 2 to 5 miutes will you slowly sufocate. the rope slowly cuts into your neck and for anyone who has tried holding themselves up for 2 minutes by a regular rope without gloves will know that it starts to hurt like hell after a while. since you cant move or readjust your grip. now, if you make the rope to long you wont feel much, since your head will be all but ripped off your body from the force of the fall. I work on a rescue and had to cut down a couple of people who hung themselves, needless to say they didn't do it right and struggled when it started to hurt.

It can be very painful if it's not done properly. The person essentially suffocates to death if the neck is not broken by the rope when he or she jumps. Have you ever tried to do the monkey bars on a playground? It would be like doing that, except with your neck, and for a really long time...like, until you died, mate.
