I had problems with a guy that has his dog crapping on my lawn and you woul dthink he would be the one getting the fence, but I'm tired of it and dont want to see his dog on my property. We are on a non speaking basis, do i need to advise my annoying neighbor of my intent to put up a fence?

check with your subdivision/housing restrictions. some will define what type or height requirements they have before you put up a fence.

Check with your local building department, my county requires a permit for a fence and do have some height restrictions. You should not have to say anything to your neighbor, just make sure fence is on your property.

Sometimes it depends on the neighborhood deed restrictions. Most places you can put up a fence enclosing the entire back yard without a permit or permission, but many areas restrict fencing of front yards.

Check with your local building office to see if you need a building permit. Other than that, you'll need the gas company to come out and flag the line so you don't hit it digging for posts and you may need a surveyor to come out and properly mark your line so you don't go into your neighbors yard.

You should not need to notify your neighbor. Just don't go onto his property. You may want to check with the local permitting office to see if you have to do a "good neighbor" fence, which means that you have to face the pretty side out.

Need to check local zoning laws to see where you can place the fence

if you are going to try and place it close to the property line, remember if the neighbor objects you can not go onto his property to install the fence

Check you zoning code. Some towns require a certain distance from the property line, while others have no requirements. Similarly, in some areas you will need a permit, and in others, you won't.

You would need to contact your town or city gov. and ask about certain Zoning rules or laws. If your town does not have zoning laws and specifications then it would all refer back to State code.
