My spouse and I seem to disagree on which looks better. I've always felt that a stone tiled entryway gave a good first impression of "Wow, nice place" (let's pretend,$$ is no object)
My spouse thinks that you are not supposed to break up the hardwood floor. There is a defined entryway and after that is the dinning rm,kitchen, and hall way which are all going to be hardwood floors.
Does any body out there know where I can find pictures of stone entryways leading to a hardwood floor? Or is this not to be??

i would say the granite can work once the colour is in the same family as the wood - meaning, if it's a cherry floor (dark) then use a granite as close in colour as possible to that. that way the eye is fooled into thinking it is wood all the way through. it should help with the wear and tear issue, since the entryway gets so much traffic. granite is normally used on countertops, so ask your local dealer if it's a good choice for foot traffic as it's slightly more porous than porcelain or ceramic tile. you may need to seal it and it may work out cheaper to use a tile that looks like granite but isn't. good luck!

No you can do it. And i think it sounds great. Make sure that your stone has shades of complimentary colors to the hardwood. Same kind of shades. You dont want there to be too much of a contrast. Using stone hear will also save on wear and tear. If you had hardwood here it would show wear a lot faster than the stone would.

I looked up some sites for you. The second and third links are from the same site. Hope this helps! Good luck, i think it will look great!

I have porcelin tile in my entry way. I had hardwood originally that traveled throughout our first floor but I got a lot more wear at the entryway. Since installing tile, it's easier to keep clean and less dirt travels into the main living area's.

I have to side with you on this one. I think the tile entry way would look great. It will be easier to clean and you can choose a tile color similar to the wood. Most houses you see have an entry way and then either carpet or wood. Look for pictures in decorating magazines or at a Home Depot. Also I have seen some great pictures on line.

Yes, of course, you can mix stone and hardwood. Just keep your color family close. Take a look into some of the model homes in new home communities and you will see many mixed materials for flooring.

Granite comes in loads of colors. If you coordinate the colors, I think it would look fantastic.

I have seen lots of pictures of kitchens with granite flooring, and hardwood cabinets. They always look very "rich" and inviting.

The granite will look great just make sure you seal it well.
