Do they collect tips together and split them, as it can be confusing trying to find the one who did the work? Do you still take not of the 15% guide even though this might mean £15?

a mechanic is [or should be ] a highly skilled tradesman they need an understanding of mechanics, hydraulics, electronics and electrics, most earn about £10ph the best mechanics either leave the trade by the age of 30 or start their own business. tipping in the motor trade is rare and unless it is given directly to the mechanic it will probably end up in the wrong department.all mechanics appreciate tips, who wouldn't?.but because of high labour charges by garages most people think it's the mechanic's fault and do not tip.
if you get to know a mechanic who has worked on your car and you are satisfied with the work even a thankyou would be appreciated.

NO.AT £50 quid an hour ,highly doubtful,I was in the motor trade for 10 years and the "technicians"as they are known as or "fitters"which is another are very good at their job, they work hard to train for 4 years and once qualified they undergo regular update and amendments in the skill.so they can earn in excess off 30-35k p/a ,blame the dealership for ripoff prices that detour you from appreciating the "mechanic" and not wanting to tip ,except maybe a chocolate from some old biddy who's just bought a Micra

i don't tip my mechanic. I don't moan either if he takes a day longer than expected. He does a good job. If my car was in near x-mas period say i would get the workshop something like a big tin of chocolates though.

When my brother was a mechanic, a few more wealthy customers gave a tip, especially when he had saved them money. It is not expected, however.
Once I had a kindness done and went to a bake shop and brought back biscuits. You would have thought I was a hero or a visiting lord.

In the United States it is not customary to tip auto mechanics. I am sorry, I do not know about other countries.

Never have tipped a garage or mechanic, and never would either. They charge £50 an hour as it is.

no, why give them a tip for doing work you pay for. the only places I would give a tip to are in restauraunts, cafes, taxis and porters etc at hotels. Car repairs are overpriced in any case.
