My child is my responsibility, and I would defend him with everything I have. People commit crimes every day. From small stuff like failure to use a turn signal all the way up to murder. Most never get caught.
At the end of the day do you tally up the crimes you have committed and go report yourself? Of course not and neither do any of these self righteous hypocrites who respond to your question.
Protect your family. And try to figure why he did whatever and teach him better.

Depends on what the crime was,
Knowing if a child will tell you the truth or not is another key, and of course whether that child was going to get a fair hearing.
If they were guilty, that's a tough one.If they were goaded by a group of others then maybe, but if it was clear cut, and serious crime, no i wouldn't. But i would not cooperate with any investigation either.

If I knew my child was guilty then no I wouldn't lie to keep them out of jail. What kind of message would that send our children? There would be no fear of repurcussions and the children would feel that they could do whatever they wanted because their parents would do anything to keep them out of trouble. It seems that too many kids today think that way.

logically yes because even courts do not entertain parents to testify in favour of their child under the clause that the parents and spouse for their own selfish reason would lie and their testimony is invalid. Hence naturally there is nothing wrong if you lie to stop your child going to jail because the justice should speak on both sides and when courts do not accept supporting reply from parents then why should we give an adverse report also ?. To become "Mahatma Gandhi" ?.

Where would you like society to evolve to?
This is a serious question with many answers, the big question is what is the right answer?
Does the personal involvement and emotion rule the action or does the common law and way of life come into effect here?
I would like to think that most humans, particularly children, would like this world to be such that you can trust your fellow man by his word. That being said then I must answer no, you should not lie regardless of the circumstances no matter how personal they may be.

You need to be more specific. The question is vague. It depends on what was done. To lie for your child is understandable and yes you want to protect your child. But it depends on the circumstances and the severity of the charge, who gains from this. Does the child learn anything positive?

No i wouldn't lie ,they need to learn from their mistakes, if i lie once for my child, they would expect me to lie again if they did something else or worse! My mums friend made the mistake of doing that and her son thought he could do anything as long as his mum would lie for him...he's got 5 years for ABH now and she's glad she told the truth this time n wished she hadn't of lied in the first place

What are you teaching your child if you lie for them? If you know they're guilty, let them be responsible for their own actions. You're almost as guilty as they are if you lie to police and you'll lose all credibility you may have in the future. DON'T LIE!!!!

My instinct would make me say yes, but the truth always come up so would it really help?
My child would still go to jail, i might go too and what about my other children? living without their mum would be to great a price to pay...
Plus the chilgoing to jail must have done something wrong and knew it was wrong. so as hard as it can be i think i would not lie and let the kid assume his/her mistakes. Which does not mean i would not support them and try and help them as much as i can...

It would depend on the crime.. if it was rape or murder then no I would not ...if it was something else I would prison is not a good place ... I would be more likely just not to volunteer things I might know, rather then outright lie.
