The sanctity of marriage was ruined by those who treat it casually and get divorced. I believe if gay marriage is illegal...then divorce should be illegal to.

So, if marriage is an institution of our government separately from an instution of our church. Shouldn't our government than grant marriage rights to whomever want to marry? In the meantime, a church would have the right to "marry" who they wish or decide not to. Therefore, there would be legal recognition of same sex marriage...However, it would not be sanctioned by a church, unless the said church would choose to do so.

So, if marriage is only for procreation...should those who choose not to have children, not be allowed to marry? Should having children be a mandate for getting married?

My personal opinion is that marriage should be a religious institution and a church should decide who they can marry.

There should be a separate legal union recognized by the government for all "partnerships" be they straight or gay...that would have all the protections, etc..of marriage.

Thereby, it leaves the word "marriage" with it's religious conotation...but, recognizes all partnerships as the same.

Adam and Steve, thing...oh please....Galatians 3:28 says there is neither Jew nor Greek, Slave or Free, Male or Female...in Christ we are one. If Christ does not see us as male or female, he cannot see us as gay or straight. Therefore, he does not care who we marry.

Given that only heterosexuals can marry, and the divorce rate is right around 60% or so, I think the sanctity of marriage was lost a long tim ago. Seems those who have the right to marry aren't even doing a good job of protecting the sanctity of it.

I'm not casting stones here, as I am divorced as well. If you make divorce illegal, than you will just end up with a bunch of "married couples" living in different houses, not really still married, even if still legally.

I don't get it either! I asked my cousin who made a remark that we need to protect the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman. I asked him if he thought that if gays and lesbians that it would become illegal for a man and a woman to get married? What is threatened? My brother asked our cousin if he was afraid that a gang of gays will go around raping straight people if they can make their union legal? He meant that as a joke, my brother has a strange sense of humor.People have been gay and Lesbian sense the beginning of time and it has not threatened the union of male and female yet so why if their union is made legal would it suddenly be a threat? As for divorce being made illegal, I think it should be harder to divorce than it is now. I think there should be counseling before divorce and that every effort should be made to stay married if at all possible.

That whole thing where they say it'll ruin the Sanctity of Marriage is simply to scare people into agreeing with them. The Sanctity of my Marriage is kept by me and my husband... that's it. No one else has a say in the sanctity of my marriage.

Agreed. I might have a little respect for this whole situation if they would make divorce illegal too. Considering Christianity is the majority in America... and our divorce rate is thru the roof.... and Jesus himself said not to get divorced (yet they'll find verses to justify their divorces)... amazing just how hypocritical people will be, just so they can spread a little hate around about other groups.

Marriage has always been, from the start, a vow taken in front of God. The non-believers began getting married in court houses. Divorces are legal by the state, not in the church. Once married, always married, unless it's annulled. So letting gays (sinners) get married would be letting an abomination become an even bigger abomination.

Getting married by the justice of the peace is easy and getting a divorce can be easy. But if you were married in a church before God, you are always married to each other before God. God doesn't divorce people. This is where the separation of church and state steps in.

The only way gay marriage would ruin the sanctity of marriage is if one of the people entering the gay marriage was previously married in a heterosexual marriage.

I think that a gay couple should be allowed to marry if they want. It's not hurting anybody.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. It is just too easy for people to bail on their marriages and get divorces nowadays, the stigma that was once attached to it has gone, although i don't agree that it should be illegal, what about those women and men who suffer from domestic abuse at the hands of their partners should they not still have the right to get out if they can?

Gay marriage will ruin the sanctity of marriage simply because God didn't ORDAIN same sex unions! I hate to use the "Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve" argument, but that's the way it is in plain English!

Marriage is a legal phenomenon, not a religious one. Separation of church and state people.

People say because it's God's command and they say it says so in the bible.

But, the bible was written by a man or men. What if they were bigot's? Wouldn't they add that it's wrong into it? What if God never spoke of this, but bigot's added it to the bible.
