In the Catholic church the tradition is red. I was my nephew's confirmation sponsor last month. The bishop, priests and confirmandi (I followed the big word truck to work today) all wore red.

Why red as opposed to any other color? I am not sure.

I wore blue. A color I not only associate with Mary, but with the saint whose name I picked.
