People get married all the time on dirt or sand or even while sky diving. Don't let the man take your hard earned money. Half the fun of having a big wedding is doing what you want.

You do not need a floor for an outdoor tent wedding, just the dance floor is fine. I think not having flooring is part of the charm of having an outdoor wedding. If you had a full floor then you might as well have just had it in a building. One suggestion though, the night before you should spray for bugs. I went to an outdoor wedding in a tent and the mosquito's were horrible. Every ones legs were getting eaten during dinner. I think we counted about 30 bites on my legs when we got home.

Fairly important actually. Dancing on grass isn't very graceful and it gets peoples expensive clothes dirty. Granted at a time like a wedding such things shouldn't matter, but in this society it most certainly does.
I can suggest a fairly cheap substitute if you and your significant other don't mind the work and the wedding is being held in a place like your family's yard or along those lines.
Plywood is cheap. 4x8 sheets go for about $20 each. Stick down tiles go for about $15/box (100sq feet per box). Strapping (1/2"x2"x8' boards) go for about $2 each.
Figure out the size of the floor space you want, buy the correct about of each product. Apply the tiles to the plywood, except the edges that will need to be screwed together. On then day of your wedding have them laid together as your dance floor, slide the strapping beneath the seems, screw down the plywood sheets so that they no longer can be pulled apart. Lay the final tiles down the seems and presto instant dance floor.
Might cost a couple hundred tops and a few hours of work.

Depends on whats available. I'm hosting a wedding in my house and there's a good size area in my backyard that has no grass. We use it as a driveway, but there's no cement. We're gonna have the dance floor be that. There are places you can rent wood floors for like $6.50 the square yard. Just look around. If not, then just have it like that. If your guest know its a garden wedding, hopefully they will think not to wear really thin heels and wont have a problem dancing.

I'd expect an outdoor wedding to have a grass floor, not a regular floor. Its an outside wedding!

I guess it depends where you live, if you get a lot of rain shortly before the wedding, without a floor in the tent your dress , shoes etc will be ruined plus your heels will sink into the ground as you walk. If the earth is dry this may not be so much a problem.

If I had to pay $2000 for a floor for one day, I'd change my venue! But I would certainly tell my guests that the service is outdoors, because whether or not the grass is dry, it's a very soft surface and you can't wear stilettos on it! You'll have a whole bunch of angry women if they ruin their Jimmy Choos!
