I usually take a couple of years off of what I really think, just to be polite (like you said). I, too, hate being asked that question, and I, too, always lie. I would never ask anyone that question!

Actually, they wanna know the truth because they may think they look younger or older. To be polite and nice about it, cut few years off, 5 is the average, just in case you guessed it wrong. You don't wanna make someone feel bad about themselves even though they asked. Human nature.

People ask you this question because they WANT to be lied to.
They are asking because they want someone to tell them that they look young, and beautiful.
They are insecure about their looks and age and they just want a simple compliment. So, in turn you either have to lie, or hurt their feelings. Which will you do? Lie, of course. *sigh*.
People..Please STOP asking people how old you look. Because when you ask that, you put other people in an uncomfortable position that they just do NOT want to be put in.
Cheers

This happened to me once. A barmaid in a pub I used to drink in asked me to guess her age, I tried to get out of it butshe persisted so I took five years off what I thought was right only to find I was still over by 7 years. She was not happy!

It's a stupid question to ask someone; it puts them on the spot.
I refuse to answer questions like that. I simply tell them that I'm no good at guessing age, and leave it at that. If they persist, just say no, however many times you have to. And change the subject.

I hate being asked too! I think people who ask it are expecting a younger answer so, I too, take a few years off! It's so embarrassing!
Sometimes I say, 'I'm no good at guessing ages'....but they still persist! lol!

I try to get out of the answering the question, otherwise I tell the truth.

I tell the truth.
I honestly don't understand why people are afraid to admit their age. We ALL started off as infants and we'll ALL become senior citizens one day (well, for those who live that long of course). My point is that no one of any age isn't experiencing anything that millions of other people haven't experienced.
We're all humans and we all age.
