There's a Bunch of "tweaks" you can do to Windows without spending any money at all that will really speed up your computer!
The list is way too long of how and what to do so here's a site to get you started on it...
Just shutting off services that you never use or need that normally starts with Windows improves the overall performance and really speeds up boot times..and that's just 1 tweak... Not to mention that some of the services are a big security risk...Like Remote Registry! (Lets someone connect to your computer and change your registry settings)
I have a 6 year old computer that's faster than my neighbors New computer...(Twice as fast)

Check you Power settings, even if you running on a desktop. I have been suprised to find power settings set at balance on desktop PC. If it is set to anything except high performance change it. Go to system properties -> advanced settings. Click the settings button and select the performance option. Reboot you computer and check you bios. If you have an onboard video card you may be able to increaset the abount of shared memory used by the video card. Increase it some, but keep in mind it will reduce how much memory is available in windows. Clean up you hard disk. Make sure there is at least 10% free space. Thats about all I can think of doing for free. Other options oare more memory, faster processore, new video card, but you said free, and no hardware is free (Unless a friend gives you some hand me downs.) Hope this helps.

Delete cookies, delete old unused files, check for virus/trojans/worms, use desktop wizard to clean up old desktop icons, download pictures on CD stored on computer as they take up a lot of space, music also. Use the disk cleanup under start - all programs - accessories - system tools - disk clean up also you will find the defrag there do this also.
Lastly reboot. I would also turn off the computer, wait a bit, as this also helps and turn back on.
Hope this helps.

The first thing to do to speed up pc and get rid of malwares and viruses is cleaning the registry with a program like CCLeaner http://bit.ly/UrApkI
It works like a charm.

you cant realy...all you can do is optimise its performance by defragmenting and shutting down unnecessary services and applications, thats about it realy. if you want it to go faster then I suggest doubling your RAM and/or a new CPU
