Why do people turn down the other person - if they have been dating a long time and were supposedly in true love? How would this change the relationship dynamics? would you break up right away?

Some people view marriage as great responsibility and total commitment... to the point of compromising loads on self, their many activities and freedom.

Turning down a marriage proposal would mean he/she is still not ready (not willing to take their love to another level) to sign on the dot. Nor envision waking up together with this particular person for the rest of his/her life yet... Questionable doubts like whether is he/she the RIGHT one for them also makes one hesitant in accepting a proposal.

Decision to break up after turning down a proposal is a wake up call.
He or She may re-evaluate their existing relationship and mutual shared goals. If there is a mismatch of goals... and when the party feels that he/she could never reconcile the mismatch... then Isn't it better to let go and not waste another person's time... rather then lead the party on endlessly.
