"Here in the shelter of our church we are assured of heaven, and we can look out the stained glass windows and delight in the knowledge that those who are not like us will be punished for it."

Wow. I want to punch that church in the face, if it was possible. Stupid people like that give us nice, sane Catholics a bad name. A local Church had theit sign say "Free Faith Lifts", which I thought was cute, but that's just...ugh. Tasteless, and sick, as you said.
And, pics or it doesn't exist. I haven't heard anything about the Pope confirming Hell. I guess I need to watch the news more...

Heaven and hell are real places. You get to choose. The sign was the kind that I would never attend that church. The chruch is community of people, not a building.

It is unfortunate that the Pope is trying to attract people by creating the fear of non existent hell at a time when people's faith in the Church is on decline.

There is nothing,"Sick" about what that sign said. It told the truth !
Now, as far as The Pope affirming the existence of Hell, I am not Catholic, so what he affirms or disavows is of little consequence to me. I knew there is a Hell long before I knew there was a Pope.

Why doesn't he let people know that their loved ones can be resurrected from hell and that hell will soon be destroyed?
This is what the Bible tells us--
"And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death." REVELATION 20:13-15
People will be judged after they are brought back to life, not before. All those who are in the Bible hell (hades, sheol) are sleeping in death. They are not suffering.

I didn't need some figurehead to tell me that Hell exists! I can't believe that there are that many spiritually illiterate people in the world that they need a priest, Pope and etc. to tell them what Scripture has said for centuries!

The Pope's a Catholic, not a Christian.
Doesn't anyone read these boards?
Nothing he says matters.
He might as well be an atheist.
I learnt all I ever needed to know about religion right here on R&S.

It's a major tactic of religion, to scare people into believing. You'll find that almost all of religion's conversion tactics involve some kind of emotional manipulation or childhood indoctrination and reinforcement. This is especially true with Christianity.
I know it is sick, but they can't really see it for that in the middle of it.

The Pope affirms every element of orthodox Christianity. That is the reason Christ appointed him.

They use fear to get 'em in the seats and then they get the money. Religion is the only tax free commercial enterprise out there. Funny that they collect for promises of false supernatural healings that when they don't pan out can attribute it to being "God's will" You can't be wrong in that equation.
It stinks. Maybe that's why they call the seats "Pews"
