High blood pressure is usually treated with more than one medication. It can seem pretty complicated so I'll try to simplify it as much as possible. A lot depend on the individual patient, the reason the blood pressure is high, the symptoms the patient is suffering from, and in some cases race. The goal is always the same. Keeping the blood pressure low enough to not cause damage to vital organs.

ACE Inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blocker, beta-blocker, and alpha-blockers, are the basic drugs used to treat hypertension. They are usually used in combination, and patient's blood pressure is monitored so the doses can be changed as need. Diuretics are also used to reduce excess body fluid. Less fluid also reduces pressure on the vasculature.

The real answer is... no one here can tell you what medication is best. The drug(s) that's best for your father can only be determined by the doctor who treats him. In addition to keeping his regular appointments, you father should be monitoring his BP at home, keeping a record, and bringing the results with him to the doctor's. He should take all of his medication as prescribed without missing doses, and contact his doctor if he notes changes in his BP readings.

Dear, you need to ask this to your doctor. Noone can tell you what best fits your father without knowing the patient's age, history of any other medical conditions (eg., Diabetes, CAD etc), his current blood pressure etc.

As a general guideline, you can start with a low salt diet and regular exercise. If this doesn't control the BP then the person needs to be started on any one of the four classes of drugs according to the patient's profile - a diuretic, a beta blocker, a calcium antagonist, or an ACE inhibitor.
In short there is no one-word answer for your question. These medicines have to be taken lifelong and it is best given by a doctor after taking due consideration to the patient's profile.

First and foremost your father's doctor knows best and must be guided by his advice!
His blood pressure will be monitored over time and medication prescribed to suit.
Your father can also help himself by keeping a good weight. Moderate exercise. Eating good food...fruit, vegetables, cereals, fish, poultry etc. Not too much red meat. Cutting out the bad fats. Avoiding salt. Take a good multivitamin. Drink enough water.
No smoking. Alcohol in moderation.
Reduce stress and maintain his sense of humour. After all they say laughter is the best medicine!
Enjoy loving support from his family. He is very fortunate to have such a caring concerned daughter.
