I live on a 4 acre smallholding and i am thinking of getting a lurcher as a pet to join my german shepherd and jack russell, I have heard some horror stories about them, and wondered if any one could share their experiences with me?

WTF???
What on earth do you mean by"HORROR STORIES"???
You been listening to MORONS at the PUB??

Lurchers are the ONLY "made-on-purpose" MUTT/MONGREL of ANY use what-so-ever. Bred to HUNT=course rabbit & hare & retrieve to hand. *&* can be used as "draw-dogs" in conjunction w/terriers.

BRED TO HUNT! Got that?
But so's the jrt & you've managed IT,haven't you? You get a decent lurcher & you'll have the makings of a great team for VERMIN REMOVAL!

WHY would you waste a good lurcher as JUST a pet? They can be BOTH!
I'd love to find a nice small lurcher(whippet X beddy?) to take out w/my Norwich & Border.

Lurchers are great dogs! The only thing you need to remember is that they hunt by sight and unless trained will chase any cat rabbit or other small furry creature they see!
They need space to run but that you can provide so I'd say go for it!

Lurchers generally make great companions, I would suggest letting them meet on neutral ground so you can see if they get on. Then let them meet a few times and then move it in. Ensure your dogs will be happy with another dog moving. You have obviously given it some thought. Hope it goes well, have fun!!

I have a lurcher and a whippet both need plenty of walks though but you sound to have the space they need. Both are very boisturous though and will jup up at people which not everyone likes but are also very placid and they give squirrels a run for their money in our local woods

I have had lurchers in the past and had no problem with them. One was greyhound/deerhound the other was collie/deerhound. My son and I had great fun with them. Go for it ! I had border terriers at the time too so don't expect a quiet walk !!

never ever heard a horror story about a lurcher.
i would be more worried about introducing a new dog around the place with the russel......in my experience they do not like new dogs on the scene (and usually spend all day trying to mate with it, whatever sex it is)
maybe try 'borrowing' another dog, get a mate to bring his round, one they dont know and see how they react to it
