Most, if not all, dog food you can buy at the grocery store or department store is not good for the dog. They have a lot of corn in them, and since dogs cannot digest corn, it is just filler and results in feces.
There is a book called, "Foods Pets Die For: Shocking Facts About Pet Food," by Ann M. Martin, which I highly recommend you reading, since you seem quit concerned about your dog's diet. You will be utterly amazed by the information in the book. Please read it. The stuff which goes into most dog foods is just repulsive and unsafe.
There are good brands out there. I like Solid Gold and Pinnacle are two of my favorite brands, but there are others.
Do your research. Your dog will thank you for it. And something to think about: though "premium" dog foods are more expensive, the savings are realized with a healthy pet, and fewer vet bills.

I hate to tell people this but canned food actually has fewer preservatives than dry food because the canning process is the main way the food is preserved....HOWEVER,
if you feed a low quality food like Alpo, Purina, Pedigree, Science Diet, Iams/Eukanuba, etc it is VERY likely that they contain harmful preservatives and other ingredients like chemicals, fillers, by-products, etc.
IF you feed a high quality canned food like Innova EVO 95% meat formulas, you can be reassured that you are feeding your pet nothing but human grade cooked meat supplemented with vitamins and oils. There is no difference in feeding this food than cooking a chicken yourself other then you don't have to find the time and clean up the mess afterwards.
So, to answer your question...feeding canned food is not bad because a human grade meat diet is really good for dogs....
Just DON'T feed low quality canned food because that is where the dangers lie.
Hope this helps.

Rice and chicken is very good.
I see you are a sucker for the dog food industry too. I am hoping with this recal that everyone noticed that Iams and walmart were both made with the same products and recalled. All of the people spending 30x as much to feed their dog the "proper" diet have been lining pockets of the greedy at the expense of the pet.
I use Purina products. It has been around since I was a little girl and everything ate purina products, dogs, cats, cattle and the hogs. It was around long before Parvo and all the other ailments that plague our pets today.

Really, the only food that is safe to give is food that you prepare yourself. Dogs do best with a raw meat and bone diet. They have difficulty digesting the carbohydrates and additives that are found in ALL commercial dog foods. Dogs are carnivores and it is silly to expect them to survive on a humanized diet- full of grains and vegetables.

Hi there I am a Veterinarian Tech and hope to help you (and your dog!)! Please, do not feed your dog any canned food, it is nothing but preservatives and very unhealthy for your dog to consume. Dogs don't need any of the ingrediants found in canned food to have a balanced diet and it is proven to cause obesity in canines. Alpo and Pedigree are ok, but very far from human-grade food. Many of those brand of dog food you can purchase at pet stores (petco, petsmart, etc.) contain a drug called Phenobarbital. Phenobarb is a drug used in the euthanasia (putting to sleep) of animals. You might be wondering how Phenobarb gets into pet food. Well, those companies will try to conince consumers until they are blue in the face that the drug levels in their food is from cows that have been euthanized. But, as we all know, most people do not humanely put their cows to sleep when their time comes, instead they are sent to the slaughter house. Those pet store companies are under a lot of heat because recent finding are suggesting that they actually put euthanized pets in their food. I know that sounds absolutely horrible and crazy, but bear with me!! Basically, when a pet owner brings their animal to be put down they have a couple of options of what they want to do with their pets body: individual crem. (where you get the ashes back), burial (where you bring your pet home to bury them), mass cremation, and mass burial. Obviously, with mass crem. and mass burial, you wont get your pet back, so many food companies will pay the companies that mass cremate/mass bury a lot of money for the bodies. That is how Phenobarb gets into pet food, whcih obviously can cause problems with organs such as the liver. Also, those companies have been caught using road kill. I always advise against purchasing pet food at pet stores because thoe "meals" listed in the ingrediants are nothing I would ever feed to my dogs. You will see chicken meal, beef meal, lamb meal, etc. All those "meals" are nothing more than chicken beaks, chicken feet, cow hooves, cow intestines, horse hair, etc. Basically, it is everything humans can't (and wont!!) eat. I know what I am telling you is hard to take in. I would like to recommed a book for you to read if you are looking for more information about the topics I talked about. It is truly an eye-opening book. It is called "Foods Pets Die For: Shocking Facts About Pet Food," by Ann M. Martin. For a better dog food, I do recommend however purchasing dog food from organic pet places. I highly recommend Timberwolf Organics (www.timberwolforganics.com), they are an awesome human-grade food for pets. It is more expensive, but you get what you pay for. Good luck and I hope I was able to help! Oh, and remember, if you are going to switch your dogs food to a different brand, make it a 3 week process!! Slowely mix the new food in with the old food until all you are feeding is the new food. This will prevent diahhrea and vomiting!

I really really really really recommend you switch to Canidae. It's all natural and about the same price as these big name bags/cans of crud. Plus, there's more nutrients and almost no fillers so you can feed them less and save some cash! I will not feed my dogs anything else unless I make it myself. If you have a cat or cats, they also make Felidae which is what my kitty gets. This stuff makes their coats really soft and shiny and has helped my oldest poodle with her arthritis.

Well, I'm not sure about living longer, but when we take our dog to the vet, he always comments on how beautiful his coat is.
Lamb and rice Purina ProPlan dry dog food,
Purina ProPlan canned wet food. It is good stuff. You're dog will like it.
You can add anything you like, such as pepperoni, a LITTLE bit of cheese sprinkled on. Just mix everything together.
Also, scrambled eggs is REALLY good for his coat. You can try yogurt too.
Good luck!

You are safest with sticking to DRY dog food. All of the wet, canned or otherwise, is dangerous.
