Okay, I have done lots of research on this. The eternity ring is 'supposed' to be given to the woman when she has your first child together. HOWEVER........This is a new age and you can give it anytime. Maybe also, you might mean promise ring?

I don't think there's any set "rule" for things like that-- I really liked an anniversary band type ring and that's what I picked out for my wedding ring! I think that it's so sweet that your boyfriend wants to give you an eternity ring, so romantic! You should do what pleases the both of you and not by some prescribed notion of "this is only for this and that is only for that". The meaning behind an eternity ring is lovely!

No you don't have to be married to get an eternity ring. He is just simply saying that the relationship hasn't reach to the stage of an engagement or marriage but just to show that I am commitment as well to show the time that we are together I and just giving this ring to you. It is also called a promise ring.

I believe it would be more of a promise ring.
One of the other post is correct, an eternity ring is 25th Anniversary.

An eternity ring is traditional for a 25th wedding anniversary, but I've heard of women getting them for the 10th wedding anniversary.
You may be thinking of a promise ring....
