We have hadthe house re wired that included additional tv points. We can no longer receive the itv or C4 channels. Upon further investigation the electrician has attached the "new" upstairs aerial direct to the main aerial using brown tape. I know this is incorrect but what is the correct way to join them? and would this affect the itv and c4 channels?

The correct way to join the wires is to install "F" fittings on the cables, then joining them with the proper device. There are a few different methods of doing this. Taping the wires together is not one of them... that's why you lost those channels (typical electrician boo-boo). Broadcast reception is a rather delicate wiring system where everything has to be properly matched in "impedance". If you have multiple outlets running off the same aerial, then you will have to use a multiple set "splitter" to send the signal from the aerial to the individual outlets without upsetting the impedance. They're available in two way, three way, etc... up to eight way. Each split cuts the signal strength, so if you're splitting more than four ways, then you might need a booster amp. Here's a couple of links that will give you a taste of how it's done:

Correct way is to use a splitter box , toddle into any electronic shop Like Tandy or Dixon's and ask for a 75 ohm splitter, the salesman should be able to show you how to connect it !..Cheers Pete

The second answer is perfect advice, you may consider upgrading the aerial for freeview whilst doing this.

you need what is called a splitter.
the main aerial lead connects to input then connect outputs.
this is okay for analogue if the signal is strong.
have your main aerial on roof for this arrangement.
