I am in an argument with my friend. He says somehow getting warm then recooling gives it somekind of damage. Can anybody solve our fight?

I can't believe some of those answers!!!

Beer is pasteurized. It doesn't matter a bit if it gets warm, then cold again. It does tend to go bad over time, so don't keep it too long.

No, getting a beer warm and then cooling it again does not do much damage to the beer especially if it is pasteurized, as most major beers (US and imported) are.

It DOES NOT cause beer to go "skunky". Skunky flavors occur in beer that has been exposed to light waves (sunlight or florescent) causing a reaction to the hops. You will see this more often in beers packaged in green or clear bottles as they offer little to no protection from light. Brown bottles or cans protect beer from light the best.

Keeping a non pasteurized beer (like many microbrews) at an elevated temperature for a long time can cause off flavors. Since it is not pasteurized, live yeast or other bacteria may still be present and can create off flavors as by products while they consume some remaining sugars.

All American beer is pasteurized. Imported beers may or may not be.

Heineken is most notoriously known for being "skunk" beer.
Skunky beer occurs when non-pasteurized beer gets warm, allowing bacteria to multiply, and it acquires a nasty flavor and a horrible smell.

This also does happen on occasion to American beers, don't understand it all too well, but I have had a few.

So yes, letting a beer get warm and the cool again can aid in the process of making a beer go skunk.

Well that depends..Bottled beer and canned beer are both pasteurized so taking it out of the fridge letting it get warm and then putting it back to get cold again will have no effect on it.. Now kegged or tapped beer is not pasteurized so once you tap it you have to keep it cold or use it up rather quickly....or else it will go bad..

Changing the temperature of the beer will change its flavor, so if you're wanting your beer to taste the best that it can, keep it in the fridge for as long as possible before opening it. Use one of those beer koozies to keep the cool temperature in for when you're in the midst of drinking it.
When the temperature of the beer rises, it will start to ferment and bacterial growth will increase. So keep the beer cool!

All it does is gets skunky. From fridge to warm and then back in or drank it does have a different taste. It's ok to drink, idiots do it all the time.

There is nothing wrong with it. If it is open it will go flat.

i don't think it goes 'bad' as much as it goes flat, and then it's particularly uninviting to drink.

yes...it goes bad. like if you take a chicken out of the freezer, would you put it back in?? no, that would be silly.
