Diplomacy first is always the best way.The Iranians know full well how the British govt can act.

Personally, as an American, I feel the British gov't is in a difficult position. The U.S. was in the same position several years ago with the N. Koreans. The Iranian gov't could move the prisoners anyplace in the country. Any hostile act by GB could very well sign the death warrants of the Sailors/Marines. Even the THREAT of retaliation against Iran could cause the death of the British troops.
All we can do on this end is pray things play out for the good of the British troops in captivity.

well there are always ignorant people that will laugh anywhere - the strongarm politics of imperialism are of the past - a proper chance has to be given with plenty of time. The US faced a problem with Iranians in the Carter administration in the 1970's and the US hostages where in Iran over a year - when Regan got in then they were released. It wont be that long of course because GW Bush is in power and Blair seems to be taking a more aggressive posture.

I assume "us" means the British. As an American, I'll respond.
The answer is no, we're not laughing at you. Remember, we had a similar situation with Iran. They stormed the US Embassy and took our people as hostages in November 1979. This was while a Democratic President (Carter) was in office. They weren't released until January 1981, within an hour after a Republican President (Reagan) was swown in.
Your situation just happened. Of course you should try diplomacy first. But there has to be a time limit for that. If the Iranians know you're willing to negotiate forever, where's their incentive to cooperate?

No.What's weak about handling a situation like this thru diplomacy.They are just rattling the sword now that Iraq is'nt the dominant power in the middle east anymore.
Besides, I would'nt be supprised if the SAS & SBS were already in place.I'm sure that HMG & the MoD have had contingency plans in place for a while now just in case what has happened happened before.

you mean sailors! and marines. they are not soldiers. nobody is laughing at anyone. if people think its a conspiracy with Iraqi "insurgents" buzz! wrong Iraq and Iran hate each other. send in the British special forces, even the sas and and sbs would laugh at that. the marine and navy personnel were caught bang to rights and taken into custody under the Geneva convention. funny how Britain is claiming UN sanctioned water to the sqare inch when 30 miles separates Britain from Ireland, several hundred miles from Britain to Gibraltar and 9 thousand from Britain to the Malvina's islands. remember when British marines landed on Spain by accident! personnel were sent to chase them. the British marines acted like it was a big joke. so who's laughing now.

How can you say that when the Americans had hundreds of soldiers detained in Vietnam that they had to negotiate for?

Weeping, actually, at Britain no longer being the country of Henry IV, Lord Admiral Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, or Churchill.
THAT England would never have tolerated such affront from a pissant country like Iran.

if some are laughing at us then it gos to show how stupid some are... people have to remember we do not have a large army etc like the USA so we cant just go trying to bully people like the USA can..
plus to the ones who are laughing at us then , don't forget who's the main one backing you up in IRAQ and who will you turn to to help you with IRAN if you do attack....
i am sure you think you could of attacked IRAQ without us.. so why did you ask us...

Only the half wits the ones with an inkling of common sense will not consider it weak but sensible.Would you consider it strong to kill thousands of people to make us look strong to the Americans or anyone else.
