Influenza is caused by a virus of the RNA type(orthomyxoviridae) of which there are numerous strains or derivatives. Flu occurs annually and in some years causes pandemics when many lives are lost, especially if the strain is virulent, like Spanish flu, for example.Flu is spread through the air by droplets of body fluid, coughs, sneezes or can be passed in blood.Vaccination in autumn to the elderly ,sick can prevent the disease spreading..Flu is infectious for about a week and the person infected will have several symptoms. Sore throat, muscle aches, head ache, cough, sneezing, fever, general body weakness. The main risk involved is that pneumonia might result.Unless there are any complication the treatment is bed rest, paracetamol or similar, light meals .
