Thankyou so much to all those useful answers about fundamentalism and extremism.
How can Fundamentalism be a positive attribute to society then?
This is something that confuses me and always has.

Fundamentalism is good for everything. It is paying attention and following to the detail. When you know the fundamentals in basketball, or baseball, your a better player. You do the little things and have a better understanding than other people. They typically enjoy what they are doing, and do not tolerate anything but complete effort. So basically, it is a concept that you are striving to be your best. That benefits society in many different ways.

In the end fundamentalism is never good, because men become more knowledgeable with dialog with the others. A society which can dialog with others is a winner on many grounds (this does not mean one has to accept everything, but that one has to leave the door open for a fair exchange).

Technically, it can strengthen tradition and protect it against transient revolts that may bring the society down. But I think a society that promotes fundamentalism is already in decay.

If a person is a Fundamentalist, He/She is quite religious about their study of the scriptures. They spend a great deal of time reading and studying the scriptures (generally daily).
