A dog should be selected based on the needs of the dog & of the owner. It requires a little research to find the right match. The AKC has great info that will help you make the right choice.

It all depends on your lifestyle, how active/inactive you are. The larger the dog, the more active lifestyle you should have, meaning - big dogs require more exercise. Smaller dogs require exercise as well, but maybe not so much as big dogs. I have Labrador Retrievers that will go all day and night!

The best companion dog is how you bring it up, train it, love it. Dogs need discipline, they need to know their place in your family, a good training program is always good. You can find great mixed breed dogs at the shelter or humane society. And the nice thing about these dogs (most) they are already potty trained, spayed/neutered, and for some, trained already. And they are very anxious to get the heck outta there!

There are a lot of dogs to choose from. One of them I like, is a Cockier Spaniel. They're like babies and will always be by your side. Another one is a Golden Retriever or a Black Lab. They're very loyal dogs who will also stay by your side. Those dogs are very easy to train and very obedient.

I have had several breeds in my life, Sheepdog, Great Dane, shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Pomeranian just to name a few....

My favorite is the Mini Schnauzer...... Not to big, not to small. very loving, faithful, and loyal. wonderful family dog (I have 2 young kids) loves to just snuggle up next to you..... Can never give enough kisses (make sure your mouth is closed though).
they are also great apartment dogs as they don't need as much exercise as larger dogs, they do NOT shed or have dogie odor. Low maintenance.......What more could you ask for......????

depends a lot on your lifestyle. Dogs that suits your lifestyle best will create less problem for you, and gives you more time to enjoy their company as opposed to cleaning their mess everyday.
