The extremist is radical and a fundamental is mostly telling people what they should do and they do ten times worse things in private. The only way is go to Jesus directly and if a person loves everyone no matter what then you know these ones are for real they are called the remnants. The outcasts .The Last Jesus said will be first and the first shall be last.

One is a religious term and the other a social or society term. I am a Christian fundamentalist, but I am in no way an extremist. I live and function in society, obey the laws of that society and live a normal life, have a family and four kids, and 6 grand kids, normal, by anyone's standards. But I am totally committed to God and to His Word the Bible. People who are anti Christian use the term fundamental and associate it with extremism in a derogatory fashion just the same way that they use the terms "brainwashed, stupid, etc" to try and make us look extreme, but we are not. The Islam association of fundamentalism with extremism has not helped the understanding in Christianity of the same words, but there is a vast difference. The term fundamentalism in Christianity started about 80 years ago in the 1920's and was coined by Christians to mean someone who accepted the Bible as the fundamental principles of the Christian life and took the Bible in a literal way as being the actual words of God. It never had anything to do with military or social reactionism against anything. A Christian who would shoot an abortion doctor, I would call an extremist. A fundamental Christian would never do that because it goes against the word of God.

The original meaning of the word "fundamentalist" referred to a person's beliefs about the literal truth of a religious text.

"Fundamentalist" used to be a term used to distinguish between different attitudes to sacred texts. Fundamentalist Christians believe that the Bible is inerrant, historically and scientifically accurate, and the "Word of God" - although what the latter expression means, precisely, can be hard to pin down. Non fundamentalists hold that the Bible can be subjected to the tests and critical processes that can be used for any other text. The conclusion of most non fundamentalist Christians is that Biblical texts express the religious beliefs and world view of their authors, and should be read within that context.

The meaning of the term has shifted somewhat in current usage, through "the rigidity with which a person applies his religious beliefs to his own life and those of others", to a current common usage which simply means "(often violent) extremist".

Personally, I prefer the earlier meaning as a much more subtle and useful definition. Anyone can be an extremist.

Hope that helps.

Kate,
I am a former educator and have studied this topic in the past. I hope that this will assist you in the assignment.

A Fundamentalist believes and follows the BIBLE as they read and believe it. They believe that it is Literally GOD's WORD.

An Extremist will pick and choose what parts of the BIble they want to follow and take it to "extremes". They have been known to bomb abortion centers and believe that GOD would want them to do so. They will use it to whatever advantage they see fit.

Have a great day and a wonderful week. Calm down... My blood sugars certainly cause me to say things that I would never say NORMALLY. I love everyone including you. Pray that our FATHER will help me.
Thanks you,
Eds, Fundamentalist

There is no difference in beliefs , just actions. They are both rigid about religion and how it is to be practiced and the rest of the world is comprised of infidels.

The only difference between them right now is that the fundamentalists have not "YET" strapped themselves to explosives to prove their point.

'Fundamentalism' applies to an approach to religious beliefs. 'Extremism' applies to all ideologies.

Fundamentalism is typically seen as a religion defined within a literal interpretation of a major religious text, such as The Bible.

Extremism means an approach to an ideology that uses or advocates means that transgresses a society's law or accepted morality.
