Because people in general are too outwardly and not so much introspective. They think that the only reality is what they perceive with the senses.
But the goal of human life is to acquire knowledge of the real self, beyond time and space and to revive our true nature of spiritual beings. Meditation can very much help in this connection, since it is a tool for reviving this original blissful consciousness of the living being.
Meditation can be a waste of time if not properly directed and without knowledge of the object and goal of the meditation. The saints and sages and the authoritative scriptures of the world recommend the congregational chanting of the holy names of God as the best means for spiritual advancement in this day-and-age. This is called mantra meditation and especially powerful in this regard is the maha-mantra (the great chanting for deliverance) composed from the following 16 transcendental names of God:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
(“hare” pronounced like “huh-ray” and “rama” rhymes with drama)
You can also chant this names privately on a japa-mala (rosary beads) everyday, regularly for quick spiritual advancement. For further instructions you can read the books of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, especially “Bhagavad Gita As It Is” available online at www.krishna.com and contact your nearest centre of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness)

i think sleeping is a waste of time.. laying around for 8 hours doing nothing! how pathetic....
i would assume SOME people would think the same about meditation.... not that i do.. i would prefer that to sleeping.. at least i would be working on achieving inner peace.

In my opinion meditation is the BEST use of my time.
Others may think that as it appears as though you are sitting down doing nothing, when really you are discovering yourself, controlling yourself and becoming one with the universe.
Most don't have the determination to commit, and to achieve real results as it requires much will power and concentration.
