Some religions encourage the taking of many wives. Other because of their customs. Generally well educated women will stop their husbands going for second wife. I have heard from one friend, his taking of several wives as allowed is to help him economically and financially. He goes for working wives. Have you any stories to share?

In Islam, the men are allowed to marry up to 4 wives but ONLY if he can provide for each of them equally. This means for example, you have 4 separate households that are run on $20,000. each. The man can't have 1 wife living in a hut while another wife is in a mansion. Me personally, I just want one wife.

Hmm, Raise the Red Lantern is a good movie about this (and a not-so-subtle stab at the Chinese government)

Actually, I believe that if one loves his wife with the depths of his heart, he will find that she is many women in one. Thus, she is many 'wives': comforter, healer of the children, psychologist, mother-figure, playmate, spiritual guide, best friend, sexy in her own mysterious way, financial consultant, house-helper, etc)

In the wayback days, it may have been more practical to practice polygamy/polyandry from the standpoint of species survival, given the high infant mortality rate (70-80%) alongside the low life expectancy (35yrs). Of course, kinship affinities were much different then, as wives often were 'chattel' due to dowries and such...

That's interesting. I wonder how some of these guys would feel if it became customary for women to take multiple husbands? I mean, as if there aren't enough gold-diggers already, imagine if women could pick a handful of rich guys and marry them all. Talk about alimony!

Anyway, more on point, I think 1 wife should be enough for any man. I can certainly tell you, ain't no way any man of mine is gonna two helpings. No, sir! And for any guy (your friend?) who has to take multiple wives for financial reasons, tell him to get off his **** and get a real job. Lazy bums! Not only is my husband only getting me (no more wives), he isn't gonna be using up my money.

Polygamy is not permissible in our Indian tradition. If the ban waived off, may be 18 (working wives) will be enough for me.

Dear God, one. To paraphrase Bill Cosby, you may be wearing the pants in the household, but the boss is wearing a skirt. You get more than one my friend and wait till they start working together. You, my friend, are screwed.
