I've had experience not only with both of them and also with other OS's (Unix, Solaris etc.) out there. And they all have their own pros and cons and user level experience.

There are too much to explain on this topic so for you to have a rundown I'll just include these wikipedia links:

Windows

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_OS

Linux

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux

But basically it depends on what kind of user you are and what you do in your job. Linux is more secure but if you like to play games you're out of luck with it. If you're a basic user and actually have a hard time using Windows (Don't worry you're the majority) I would never recommend Linux (Although if you really really want to learn it ofcourse it will take time, but I bet you'll like it). Oh yeah the Windows 2000,XP, 2003,Vista is very very stable, even for advanced users, so open your minds and appreciate it (for Linux fanboys).

Oh yeah one more thing don't listen to these Linux fanboys, they have closed minds and only think that Linux is the only OS you'll ever need. Try asking your 60 yr old computer illiterate grandfather to use it and open yopur freaking minds and see why Linux is not and will not go mainstream for a long long time. I actually am more leaning to Open Source Solaris to get ahead of Linux.

Let us assume that all the Linux geeks have gone on and on about how wonderful Linux is, and instead lets ask this question.

Which operating system suits which purpose.

LINUX
is good for people who would like to learn more about computers.

It is good for servers (most servers are Linux)

It is the operating system of choice for supercomputers

Good for special purpose systems, such as network hubs and so on.

Good if you want everything free and legal (as opposed to free and illegal).

Good if you want to talk endlessly about how good Linux is and how it is better than Windows.

Good for cheap old hardware

Windows
Is good for general office use, mainly because it runs Microsoft Office

Good for small networks (it works the same as the desktop windows, so it easy to learn)

Good for security (Linux users know how to make their computer secure, so I bet that their Windows system is just as secure as their Linux system. Most security comes from people who don't understand computers so don't use Linux).

Good for Powerful all purpose servers. With Windows you run one server to do everything, with Linux you run 3-10 servers to do the same.

Good for games and other real time applications.

Make your choice, Linux is based on Unix, an operating system designed in the 1970s. Sure it was designed by a true genius, but it has limitations. It is not perfect. There are many times when Linux is the best platform to use and many times when Windows is better.

Linux is a enhanced gadget with greater versatility than abode windows, in spite of if it does no longer have the video games and person utility that folk anticipate with abode windows. The virus power comes from a decrease variety of customers and for this reason a decrease profile. in case you're conscious of DOS, then Linux is comparable. It probable is merely too stepped forward for an 8 year old yet once you would be taking care of the working gadget for him/er and are gentle with a keyboard orientated gadget, then it might desire to be effective. look at what variety of compatibility issues will exist between Linux classes and what's used in college.

In addition to all the above. You can give Linux a test drive on your hardware without installing it with a live CD that boots from your CD drive. You can't do that with Windows.
Oh by the way I'm a 60 year old guy who had no experience or interest in computers up until 2 years ago. I have no trouble with Windows, Puppy Linux, PClinux, Mempis, Elive,DreamLinux all of them are pretty easy to use. We Geezers are not as stupid as Ed POGI seems to think we are.

Windows is unstable, insecure, and slow. Linux is stable, secure, and efficient.
Also, windows is compatible with most everything, linux is not.

btw, those who say linux is not user friendly have clearly never used ubuntu.
