I'm horribly shy, have never approached a girl before, and have been on one date with a girl who came onto me. I'd like to get a phone number, and a date, that's all. I need something to get confidence and validate my ability to actually be with someone.

Put yourself out and make friends with some girls. Ask questions about the work in class, join clubs, study groups etc. But do not--let me repeat that, DO NOT--try to hit on these girls. Be friendly only, don't view them as potential girlfriends. (Bonus: this is a lot less intimidating than trying to ask a girl out on a date.) There are two reasons this works: first, girls find you a lot less creepy when they realize you have female friends who are regular girls. It takes away a lot of the weirdo factor from a guy. And secondly, most girls love hooking people up. Once they realize you're a cool guy and single you won't be able to stop them trying to hook you up with all their single girlfriends! They can introduce you to other girls and since you have a mutual friend you can ask that friend if girl-in-question is single, might they be interested etc.

As for how to make friends with girls, it's easy: just be nice, try to talk to them, no pressure. Ask about a study group, IM them, but don't be flirty or suggestive, they'll think you're hitting on them.

Good luck dude :)

catch up with a girl you think seems pretty/smart/nice after a class and ask her out for milkshakes.

for real!

you just have to decide to do it. don't build up pressure about it by telling all your friends, just decide at the end of class who it's gonna be!

and if she says no, don't worry, because you're going to ask someone else after your next class.

repeat until you have a nice girl to talk to and have a milkshake with.

you will get more comfortable as you try this out --- it will be tough at first, but same with everything else that's new!

think of what kind of girl you want to hang out first then when you do know... research on where they usually hang out..... go there...but don't make a fool of yourself and approach them. Be mysterious...and most important... evaluate the clothes in your closet...and your over all appearance...

When that is done...and you do get a conversation going with a certain girl... don't rush into your objective... see if she really likes you... when you think she does...let her dangle a bit...don't be too available...it takes away your mystery factor...

She'll usually bite after a week of cat and mouse...
