I have an almost-3 year old GSD as well, and while he's not overweight (he's very energetic and we have a big yard, so he gets to exercise a lot!), I feed him 3 cups of ALPO Prime Cuts kibble at 6pm everyday. So that's about 1.5 cups if you divide it in a day.
My Doberman, however, is overweight (he doesn't like exercising much). I've cut his 3 cups of ALPO Prime Cuts to one serving of 1.5 cups a day.
My advice? Stop giving him treats on the side unless you're doing a training session. You mentioned that you give him biscuits and cakes for snacks--CUT DOWN ON THOSE. Cutting his dog food to maybe 1.5 cups should be good enough. Or try Eukanuba Diet food (although I don't endorse Eukanuba, since that whole PETA scandal about them maltreating their "test" animals).
But most importantly, EXERCISE. I know it's hard to find the time to do that, but start with 30-minute jogging sessions every day before or after work. You'll notice a dramatic change in weight within 2 months. Plus you get to bond with your dog--that's priceless!
Good luck! :)

Cut out the snacks, and feed him a weight reducing diet such as royal canin weight control (available at your vet). Do not reduce him to one cup of dry per day! that would be starving him.
I feed my great Dane 5 cups in the winter and increase it in the summer to 8 cups when he starts to get excercise again (he can't go for walks in -40 c).
How much your dog eats depends on how much excersice it gets. My mothers shepard gets 4 cups year round but then he is also consistenly active and recieves no treats.
Also, very important, please discuss any kind of weight reducing plan with your veterinarian or an animal health tech at your vets office first!

Tho Im not an expert it does seem like a cup of food a day for a GSD inst enough as I feed my pug 1 cup of dry food a day, 1/2 cup in the am & 1/2 cup in the pm & this was reccomended to help her lose some weight as she has goten kinda plump, but I like you was giving WAY too many bizkits & snacks. Id check w your vet as they should know best!! BEST OF LUCK!

Try a weight control formula dog food, there are many on the market. I feed my mini schnauzer who is also pron to weight gain Royal Canine weight control for older dogs(she is 2 1/2).... It will tell you on the side of the bag how much you should be feeding him for his size and age........ Keep in mind some dogs will eat until they pop...... I realize he is still a pup but you can change him to regular once he looses the weight...... Big dogs also need a lot of exercise, is he getting enough.....

Oh man..you spoil your dog. You CAN NOT feed a dog cookies of any kind. It is very very bad for them. Chocolate can even kill them...and not in the long run either, just like that.
You can feed a dog all the dog food it wants unless it is an habitual over eater. DON'T FEED IT ANYTHING ELSE! Specially if it is overweight. The weight should be back to normal in no time.

I would start cutting back a bit at a time but I also don't think 1 cup of food is enough for a dog that size. Call your Vet and ask him what he thinks.

i used to feed my dog eukenuba, and u only have to feed them around a cup or so, if its a good quality dog food then it will b nutricious enough, my dog is an adult now and i feed him scraps, and a bowl of dried food a day, he eats so much but looks so boney, hes a whippet, i hope u dont have to pay alot for the trainer, it wouldnt b too hard to put a dog on a diet, its alot easier than putting a human on a diet, we can easily open a fridge or cupboard,

I have the same kind of dog. Lately I've been feeding him small breed dogs like yorkies and chihuahuas. Which is a step down from the school kids he used to devour. Since the change in diet, I've noticed a bit of weight loss. I may throw some foreigners into his diet if it keeps decreasing.
Best of luck!
