Protrusion of your rib is not indicative of a bone tumor or possible bone spur. The condition that comes to mind immediately is Scoliosis.
Scoliosis causes the spine to curve laterally to the left or right and affects children and adults. Scoliosis is a complex three-dimensional disease. To understand this concept, consider that in some cases, as the spine abnormally curves, the involved vertebrae are forced to rotate.
At the thoracic level, vertebral turning impacts the rib cage and may result in rib prominence on the opposite side of the curve. Deformity is the primary complaint. Back pain from scoliosis is uncommon
Scoliosis occurs in approximately 2% of women and less than 1/2% of men. It usually starts in the early teens or pre-teens and may gradually progress as rapid growth occurs.
Once rapid growth (puberty) is over then mild curves often do not change while severe curves nearly always progress.
And if you had been examined by a Dr. And x-ray was taken. I wouldn't be too concerned esp if you have no pain or any discomfort from this abnormality. It might just be a case of being thin on the upper part of your body. As you're still a teenager, your body is still growing and might feel a little awkward.

If the Xrays Show that Your 5th Rib is NOT Fractured AND they did not Report any other Condition of the Rib then You have a Clean Bill of Health---They are OBLIGATED to tell your Parents if there is any Evidence of Bone Cancer---If You are not on any Drug Therapy at Present---You can Consider The Tumor Question Answered---As to The Rib Sticking Out---If it is not Painful & You Can not move it around easily then You Have a Rib that is Curved a Bit More than the rest---You are 14 now---Give it a couple of years---Your Rib Cage Should Even out---If not,Then you can Have it Reduced Back To the Shape of the ribs above & Below it without any complications---It is good that you are aware of your body & you Want to be Healthy and Normal---Keep that Mind set and you may live a Long time---I Wish All My Patients were as Concerned as you---Good Luck---Stay Well---Signed---JEM

Don't worry so much. Something would have shown up on the xray if it was there. Your body is going through a lot of changes in your teen years. Some parts grow faster or look out of sync with others of the same thing. It's normal & probably not as obvious as you think. If you have no symptoms besides that I'd just chalk it up to puberty. I had a friend who had one leg 2-3 in. shorter but by the time he grew up it balanced out fine. Plus we're always more aware of stuff like this than others are & we tend to think the worst. I'd trust the dr. & your xray in this case. Especially if he couldn't see any reason for concern.

If you have no other symptoms, and your doc xrayed it, you should be okay. Ribs aren't always uniform. You could have been born with one rib not in quite the same alignment as the others. If you've lost weight recently it may have become more noticable.

It's unlikely that an x-ray would miss a bone tumor, but if you are convinced something is not right, ask your parents to get a second opinion. And you also need to let your own doctor know how anxious you still are about this.
