Because , as the Old Saying goes, Misery Loves Company. A surprising Number of People are actually Happy being Unhappy ! Look at Country Music . Most of it is really Sad and Depressing, and Reflects on Life's Misery. On Saturday Night Live, the Country Singer Carrie Underwood was Singing Her latest Song about how Her Boyfriend Cheated on Her. To get even, She Slashed His Tires, Busted out His Headlights, and Scratched His Paint with Her Keys. While She tried to Sing Happy, it was, in Fact a really Sad Song . I'm with You ! I Like Music that's Positive, Happy, and Fun !

Some people find that music can reflect the feelings of the heart, so depressing music is just a way for some people to ponder on their own misery and just feel worse about it. Frankly I don't really care about "if I don't like his Girlfriend" (like Avril) but I suppose it's just a natural human reaction.

People usually listen to music that speaks to them. When I was going through my slutty stage, I listened to rap and r&b because they only talked about sex. At 17 I was angry at the world so I listened to Marilyn Manson, The Used, etc. Music is a good way to express yourself, to get your emotions out in a way that no one gets hurt. It's even a way to understand yourself and know that there are other people in the world who feel like you and go through the things you do every day. So the song may not be very uplifting or inspirational, but when you exercise your right to express yourself, it's like therapy to a tortured mind.

Must appeal to some dark side in their nature, or they simply like listening to stuff that makes them depressed. My daughter's ex loves listening to a lot of stuff like Jeff Buckley etc, and while I don't mind some of that kind of music, I can't constantly because I'd feel like slashing my wrisits, ... yet so many kids like this stuff. And we wonder why youth suicide is such a big issue in our world today ? !

okay i have to admit i listen to music like that...and to be honest i really don't know the answer. I think it is just nice to hear their lyrics because most of them try and appeal to ordinary people...not nessisarily themselves...they have songwriters...and the lyrics are nice to hear because when you hear a song that pertains to your mood, or emotion at the time it is just kind of comforting...when i can't say the words myself it is nice to hear someone else say how they are feeling and relate to that...it's just how i vent.

i don't listen to the rubbish you speak of, but i do listen to quite a bit of depressing music. though when i am depressed, i go for something a little more upbeat. why do i listen to it? to remind myself that things are not all that bad.
