It still varies a lot - there's so much competition on that route that there should be lots of flights. Booking through the airline directly is probably the best though. I always check sites like expedia.com or travelocity.com and see which airline is the cheapest, and then go to that airline's website, pick the same flights, and more than 99% of the time it's the same price - except those sites all charge a "booking fee" of at least $5. So it's better to book through the airline. Check with the "low-fare" carriers as well - most of them don't list their fares through those websites so you'll have to check with the airline directly. Although they're very often no cheaper. And you'd also probably have to fly out of Oakland which may or may not be convenient for you.

The cheapest you might get on SFO or OAK to NYC is $200 round trip, if there is a sale. The normal fare is $300-$400, advance purchase, economy roundtrip with a Saturday night stay. There is good competition on these routes, if you search both OAK and SFO (and Sacramento and San Jose, if those would also work for you) to airport code "NYC". When you use NYC, it will search LaGuardia, Newark, and JFK airports all together for the best offer.

If you buy right now, the cheapest June, July, or August departures look like $250-$260 total with taxes and fees included. Try http://www.bookingbuddy.com to track down the fare you want, then go direct to the airline to book it.

It all depends on where you're coming from and to where you are going. Sometimes I wouldn't recommend buying directly from the airlines since they are costly, but if they offer cheaper, then I'd suggest it.

I always go to a local travel agency. I usually compare fares from one to another, maybe up to 10 places, and the cheapest I could find, I grab it.

Hope this helps.

Well I always have good luck with Sun Country. But try to get your flight on a Tuesday or Thursday I think its cheaper. I guess it all depends on where your going and from where your coming.
