Ask your dad what he doesn't like about having a dog. Get him to write it down. Them go through it with an answer to each objection.
EG
If he thinks a dog is too much trouble to walk, then you can say having a dog is a great way to keep fit, as all the walking and fresh air is great for the health. Or that you will do all the walking, and he can come along whenever he wants.
If he thinks a dog is smelly, you can say that giving a dog a bath with special dog shampoo does the trick.
Tell him a dog is great to warm his feet at night, they love lying next to the ones they love.
Dogs are great protectors.
Dogs love you no matter what.
And you are never alone when you have a dog.
Say to him that you know a dog is hard work, too, and that they need love, care, exercise and training. But that you and your mum are up for the challenge. I am sure you will find a great dog for your family. And what better way to give a little love back than to get a rescue dog. And that your dog will give you all he or she has, too.
Good luck!

omg i am in the exact same situation.
me and mum are gagging for a dog we managed to let us have two cats but a dog is just no go no matter how much we have tried.
my step dad had dogs when he was younger and had to give them up as they were guard dog GSD's and he had a kid on the way so for saftey gave them up which was heart breaking for him. therefore all the time he says he doesnt want one i think that this is the reason.
As you say he will love the dog once hes sees it but its so hard to first of all go against him.
I agree the only way your going to manage this is by putting on sob story and convincing him your rescuing one that needs a loving home and will take care of if the best you can.
hes probably thinking of the money side of it too so try and say you and your mum will cover all costs.
unfortunatly i know my step dad will never give in and i have got wait to move out until i can have one but i dont know what your dads like and its worth a try.
good luck i will be sooo jealous if you get one you will be so lucky! x

Any reasons for him not agreeing to it?
Try persuading him that both you and your mom will be fully committed when it comes to taking care of it, that way he doesn't have to get involved (if that's what he wants)
Having pets, especially dogs, allows people to become more loving and gradually start to care more about those around them. In addition, having a pet can develop your sense of responsiblity, which is a positive quality no individual should lack.
Of course, introducing a pet into the household can be great fun and I will not be surprised if family ties are strengthened.
Promise him that he wouldn't be seeing dog poo in the house any time soon =)

Getting a dog is a huge commitment. Taking them out for long walks in all weather conditions having someone look after it during holidays , this is expensive if you do not have someone willing to do this for free. Dogs can live a very long time and you should take this into consideration. I pleaded for a dog when I was 12 years old and eventually my parents caved in. I loved my dog to bits, he lived to the ripe old age of 17, so I had left school, gone to university and then got a job before he eventually passed away. so it is long term and you should think about this.
Otherwise dogs are fantastic pets, please just think carefully before commiting to getting a dog.

I would suggest babysitting a loved one's pooch with a very respectful attitude and genuine pleasure display while playing with the doggie.....then your Dad will know you're not trying the same angle as with the kitties and see how happy everyone else is in the house. How can he resist the "idea" of having a doggie? (Oh!! Make sure the little visitor gets along with your kitties, ok?)

Well. Even a very small dog will bark and let you know if someone is trying to enter your property that shouldnt be. A dog is good company, good protection, company while exercising (jogging), people who own pets are less stressed. If it were me, Id just get the dog.....

when my mum and me and my sister wanted a cat, and my father disagreed, my mum just went out and bought them. He was annoyed at first, she went out and let him cool off, when she returned with the shopping he had dozed off. With the cat on his lap.
