I take every oppurtunity to tell and show my kids about the dangers of cars. They have to hold my hand at all times, and I stop and have them look both ways everytime. Sometimes something will come on tv or a movie where someone gets hurt or hit by a car, and I say--That's what happens when you don't look for cars. They are very good about watching out, but they ARE kids, so I never take a chance with making them hold my hand.

while showing them, tell them exactly what you are doing and why. Tell them that cars can hurt you if you run out in front of them, people don't pay attention to the things around them. Look both ways. Hold each others hands, or an adults hand when crossing. When there is an incident on the news, like in my area a child was struck by a tow truck while running across a parking lot unsupervisied, I make sure I bring that up to my childs attention.

Lyllyan takes Bosy by the hand and they stand on the curb.
Now, Bosy, the street is for cars, not for people. You have to be very careful when you cross the street. The cars go very fast and can't always see you. You could get hurt very badly. Always hold my hand when we cross the street. Ready?
Okay - first we look both ways to make sure no cars are coming. Do you see any cars coming? No? Look one more time then we will start across.
......Lyllyan and Bosy walk quickly across the street and stand on the sidewalk.
Now, see? Until you and older and we talk about it, never cross the street by yourself. Always remember to look both ways, then look again.

I just told my kids to not go into the street. We lived in a small neighborhood, but cars used to race down the street, so they understood why they weren't allowed in the street. If you remember as a child "the look both ways before crossing the street" saying our parents used to tell us...it was always look left once, then right, then left again....

I believe that while this should be discussed, it should be a hands on experience. Cross the street with the child, hand in hand, and explain the process including the street lights, etc., while demonstrating in a way the child will absorb what is being taught. Children grasp more by example, I believe.

My mother always held my hand when we crossed the street. When I was old enough on my own, I was told of the dangers of vehicles (I even saw a demonstration where a crane dropped a car and it blew it to smitherines). My mother told me what a car could do to my body if i were to just frolic out onto the street.
I was told always to make sure I had no cars coming either direction for me to cross.

just draw simple colourful pictures and explain the pictures like telling a story. Explain in the picture what will happen if they don't be careful.

Don't talk - show. Teach them over and over again until they get it & then watch them practice.
