Behavior changes while your friend is healing is perfectly normal. Your kitty is in a lot of pain, and if not pain, he's pretty damn uncomfortable.

Give him 10-14 days (Unless specified differently by your vet) to get back to normal.

Move your kitten to the bathroom where cleaning is easier. Visit him often and talk to him. Make sure he has a clean litter box and a blanket or towel to sleep on. He's probably still scared from his operation. If that is the case, your reassurance should help him overcome the fright. If he is not better by next week, call the vet because he could have something wrong from the surgery.

if its not a matter of being traumatized while at the vet..

perhaps you should go through a refresher course on using the litter box with your cat.
take him to the box and set him in it so he can sniff around in it. take a paw and help him dig into it a bit.

another thing you might consider is restricting your cat from having the full run of the house. allow him only on tiled floors for awhile.

during the day.. about 15 minutes after feeding and drinking.. take him to the litter box and repeat the - get re-aquainted with the litter box - routine.

if you allow your cat outdoors.. that would be good too.

Cat's react differently to many things.. this change for him was probaby very upsetting..

I have been told by my vet that cat's will make this change for a number of reasons.. one being they had a painful experience in the litter box... if this is so.. it could be a little harder to get him back in there... you may have to change the spot the box is in..

I am sure when he is feeling his old self again he will again be using the litter box.. until then.. when you catch him in the wrong spot.. take him back to the litter box.. and put him in.. he will get the idea that's where he's suppose to go...

good luck

He is upset, in pain, and he may not be able to get to the litter box. He will be okay when he heals.
