Fear.
I'll lay it out, plain and simple. They know that God has set the rules for moral conduct and how He wants us to live our lives. They want to live as THEY see fit, not as God sees fit. So it's easier for them to deny God, because in their minds, it makes Him "go away", if they pursuade themselves that He does not exist.
When you discuss your faith, or ask questions, it reminds them about God, and their rebellion against Him. Since affirming Him would reflect their rebellious lifestyle, they must get on the defensive and try to prove YOU wrong. This is their safeguard. If they can keep God away from them, in their own minds, and others from bringing Him up, then they can justify in their minds that there is no God, and that they are in total control of their lives.
Think about it..... why would anyone get defensive about something they claim they don't even believe in? I don't believe in Martians. So I don't spend my time attempting to disprove them. I know they don't exist. To dwell on what is not real is a waste of time. If they existed, but I denied them, that would be a different case.
They know, deep down, that they will face Almighty God someday. But their pride won't allow them to abandon their current way of thinking, and they keep up this smokescreen of "out of sight, out of mind. "
Anger from them is something you must expect. Jesus said, "Many will persecute you for My names sake." Consider their actions as a fulfillment of His words, and a bolster to your faith.
Best wishes.

It's attitudes like the ones voiced by butterflybaby above me there that anger atheists. Arrogant, small-minded, and divisive attitudes.
Presuming to know what I think "deep down" when the religion that person claims to follow says not to judge another person.
Questions like yours are not easy to answer, because I don't know the specific examples of atheist responses you perceive as being angry, so it is difficult for me to gauge whether you are being reasonble in your interpretation of them or not.
If atheists have been unfairly mean to you or you have seen them be to other Christians, I suggest you talk to them personally with a calm and cool head.
I also suggest you refrain from generalizations. That tends to anger people as well as it is unfair to those your generalization does not apply to.
Edit - Appears I have to add Mei T to the list of people who hold the attitudes of people like butterflybaby.
Consider how offensive it would be if I were to tell you, "I don't believe you really believe in God. Deep down you know there is no god and you're just too scared of losing that comfort to admit it!"
That would be an unfair and offensive statement. It would be below the belt. It would be the same as Christians who say such things about atheists.
Oh, look... CJ too. Are you beginning to understand why we would be offended, with Christians saying such things about us?

Have you received many e-mails from Atheists calling you names. I have received around 30 e-mails from Christians that start off something like you are a devil-worshipping idiot, who doesn't believe in God, not because he doesn't exist, but because you have Satan in my heart, you are a bad person with no morals who likes to bash old ladies for their pension money.
I am told I need faith, that all the answers are in the bible, and if I would open my mind to logic, then I would find Jesus instead of Satan. They then go on to say, that I am wrong to judge Christians for their beliefs, that there is evidence of God around us. Dinosaur bones were planted to test the faithful etc. etc.
Then they end it by saying Jesus loves all. Hope you have a good day!
So whilst you may not judge personally, many Christians here do.

What you call faith is nothing but conditioning.
You are told to believe something and not given any proof that what you are being told to believe is actually true. You believe it because that is what you were conditioned to believe!
As for the anger and hatred I do understand it. Because I have it! For me it is due to the fact that so many christians will push their religion on anyone and everyone reguardless of if the person wants to heart it our not! They have no respect for any beliefs but their own. Anyone that is not a Christians is following the devil, And other equally ignorant ideas! Then there is the fact that Christianity was used for over 600 years to torture and murder (Mostly women) in the name of their God. A God that these Christians teach is a God of love!
Oh yes and let's not forget the brutal way this God behaves in the bible. And how he approves of Incest, Rape, Murder. You know all the good qualities you want your child to have!

I cannot speak for every atheist but I'll tell you how I react when Christians express their faith:
-Respect
When the expression of faith leads to good: Reduction of oppression, human rights and understanding in an increasingly polarised world (see the comments of Rowan Williams and Desmond Tutu).
- Hostility
When they lead to polarisation, hatred and misinformation. See the comments of fundamentalist Christians Ted Haggard, Pat Robinson on everything from earthquakes in San Francisco to homosexualityetc
- Incredulity
When Christians, in expressing their faith, assume that the Bible has cornered the market on all truth-scientific, philosophical and social-and interprete it literally to foist their views on others. See Scientific Creationism.

It's opinionated. People have their different opinions, and unless you have asked every atheist there is on earth, than you can't say for sure that they always get angry. They have their views on why you have faith in God. It is not always like that. For instance I have some colleagues that are atheists, but they don't care that I am Christian myself. It is my free will to be Christian and they respect that.

funny that you ask that, it's usually the other way around. I try my best to be patient to these types of conversations due to my raising in a very religious household, but as I got older I realized that although I searched in other religions for answers they were never really explained or just fell to the imagination. While science almost always has an explaination; so I personally decided on what worked best for me, it's just hard to believe the things I was brought up believing. Also, it just seems like it's always christians who are pushing me into a talk or event. maybe we just want to mind our own preference without having to defend or explain ourselves

Everyone knows in their hearts that God is real. Weather it is voiced or not. Just like God has " marked on everyone's forhead right from wrong" We know there is a God just as well as we know right from wrong. It is almost a fact. I believe they and other people "not believing" in God are afraid. They are so afraid they are trying to convince and reassure themselves that there really is no God and/or that God has no power over them or their lives in any way. But the truth is that there is a God and he is very powerful for he can raise the dead, heal the sick, create the earth or anything else with nothng but words. so don't ever tell me you created something. you made it. there is a difference. lol. I am not going to apologize for anything I said on here because I am not sorry, but incase anyone took offense to any of it, I did not mean to be harsh or make any offenses. Even though this isn't part of your question, I also believe that another reason people don't believe in God is because they haven't thought very seriously or deeply about it. I am not saying this is true for all people. But I believe most.

Ok - I had a sympathetic answer for you... but then I checked out the questions you had asked.
If you ask something like "Hey you nonbelievers, if GOD does not exist then who answers your prayers?", of course you are going to get negative answers.
You just threw down the gauntlet and asked for argumentative opinions. Watch what you ask for, because generally "God does answer your prayers..." just more literally than you like, apparently.

well one christian tv aired testimonies of atheists (before), most of them i remember saying that when they're young they were christians; they'd go to church; they did not start being atheist as kids. but because something happened to their loved ones, or bec. frustrations, and dissapointments they resorted to not believing in God anymore. i believe in their hearts lie the seed of loving God, but they just don't want to nurture it, let it grow and be obvious or stir it up. they want to hide and deny it - that is why they are defensive, sarcastic, often angry when hear about God.
Keep on praying for them and refuse to be offended, for God is longing for them. :)
