A black or dark blue suit, avoid pinstripe, with a white shirt and tie. If your female a suit will make you look like you've just come from work so stick to a long (at least shin length) dress.

Sorry for you and your family.
I would say it depends on his life and personality (I know you said he is a southern gentleman but I am assuming that means American? I am from Australia so I don't know what they wear or anything). I guess if they were the sort of person that wore bright colours a lot then wear something to celebrate him in that way. Otherwise wear conservative (not too revealing) clothes that are neutral / dark colours.

Well, I think in movies they always make funerals seem more somber than in real life. At the funerals I have been to, no one was really super formal or dressed all in black or anything like that. I'd just suggest nice clothes and nothing too happy looking.

Dark, somber, or muted colors. Black or navy blue is best. Something very conservative and reserved. Imagine church with grandma and you should be okay. But go with dark or muted colors. Charcoal gray is also acceptable.
Ask family members what they are wearing if you are concerned. Let them know you haven't been to one before and would like to be appropriate, they shouldn't give you a hard time about it.
