You'll find no provision for the federal government to be involved in education if you read The Constitution. You'll find national defense to be a primary function of the federal government in the same document.

Education is a state and local matter.

From what I have seen in Atlanta, it is not a funding issue. The funds are being misappropriated by the school systems the majority of the time. It is not a coincidence that schools have gotten worse as funding has increased. Education should be funded at the State level anyway, so I don't think the Federal Govt should increase spending at all. What is good for California is not necessarily good for Georgia. The problem with bad schools are a direct result bad parenting and the bad teachers being protected by the Unions. Public schools administrators and teachers are not held accountable for their performance. On the flip side, many students because of how they were raised have become unteachable. Public education, especially in the inner cities are doomed. The answer is private schools that are run like a business instead of this PC crap on how we have lowered the bar so low so that the kids can feel good about themselves.

Protecting our borders and sea ports should take priority over throwing money at an already over-bloated education system. The education system isn't in need of money. It is in need of competent leadership, starting with qualified teachers in every classroom in America. Also when you have a system that uses Ebonics as an acceptable form of communication, that's an example of how incompetent and short-sighted the system has gotten. We have high school seniors who are graduating who can't even write an essay or read on a 6th grade level. Throwing money at those issues won't solve anything. Common sense will. Homeland Security and illegal immigration are the two most important issues of our times. We are only a dirty bomb away from another $2 trillion loss to the US economy.

Homeland security should get the funds they need for their activities. Education should get the funds they require for their activities. The two departments are not comparable but they are both essential. This is a country of laws that need to be obeyed for the health, safety and well being of our citizens who don't always treat each other nicely. Our educational system should be guided by higher ideals and teach the things that compel us to embrace democracy over socialism or communism for instance. It is high time that everyone study the ideals this country was founded upon and then decide what country they are moving to. The girls on my beach are not going to trade their bikinis for burkas and if you try to turn me into a communist, I will ship your carcas to a better place. Peace Brother!

In the long run money spent on education is the best way to spend it. Better education puts people in a better position to deal with conflict, be it personal, national, or international. Fear and aggression feed on ignorance. Terrorism feeds on ignorance.

In the end the nation with the best systems of education and health care will rule the world. No WMD can compete with that.

Personally, I think the best means of security are expanded foreign-aid and other charitable programs. Expanding our own capabilities for violence only adds to the climate of terror.

We ought to be acting less like a schoolyard bully and more like the teacher.
