I just read the Heimlich article http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/heimlich_hound
Its amazing at itself that a dog can actually save a person from a burning building, let alone perform the heimlich maneuver. Is there a way that I can teach my dog how to save my life? I know this may seem out of place but, can dogs really comprehend the danger around their masters and the environment around them?

My life has been saved by two different dogs. Neither of them were trained to do so.
One German shepherd dog that I had just adopted, saved me from a murderer...He bit his arm and sent him howling. (the guy killed someone else that night)
The other was just 2 years ago, I was in the woods, had slipped and was falling down a cliff, hanging on by a clump of fern over my head..With my back against the cliff..No way to turn around to get a foot hold...Loooong drop down to a rocky gully..My little mutt ran for help and brought them to me.. I never go hiking in the woods without my little mutt.
I rescued both dogs, and they rescued me.

I guess you could tell, that I love dogs!

YES dogs honestly comprehend danger!
I don't know how to tell you to teach your dog the heimlich, but I can tell you a story about my BIANCA -- she went EVERYWHERE w/ me!!!! To the Daiquiri Shop, where she climbed upon the stool and put her 2 front paws on the bar LOL. We rode around in my car all the time! She knew where we were going at what time of day. One day on our way to the post office, I experienced my first seizure; behind the wheel of the car, crossing a railroad track with a train coming; the road ahead has a slight "S" turn in it; since it was lunch time traffic was heavy on the road up ahead at the STOP sign, but that was still 1/6 of a mile away. I remember going up to the first rail of the crossing......NEXT thing I knew the dog was licking me in the face, I was stopped at the STOP sign with cars and trucks going left and right in front of me... SCARED out of my wits; I drove straight to my doctor who sent me across the street to the hospital to run tests. I had never before had a seizure.

Not only do I think that article is a load of bull, there isn't really a way you can teach a dog to "save your life" like that.

I think dogs can comprehend danger, but do you really think a dog will know what to do?

You need to understand how dogs learn and the training process, and you'll understand why you can't train a dog to save your life. Training dogs is more like conditioning rather than having it understand every little thing and remembering it.

I can see how they could be valuable, however simply fundamental obedience is by and large adequate to maintain a puppy trustworthy. Other than come, my puppies dont realize the ones instructions, however they do realize that they don't seem to be allowed to contact meals till I say its k. I used to be striking out rat poison the opposite day, the tray broke open, and a few small bits fell to the kitchen ground. My center darned close stopped, since there are as a rule 2 to 3 small puppies at my toes, hoping for a crumb. But I effectively yelled HEY, the entire puppies sponsored clear of the poison, and I used to be ready to decide upon all of it up with out them touching it. I have additionally taught all of them to sit down at doors and curbs and watch for my liberate, and I do believe that has helped to maintain them trustworthy. "Down" in my condo method get off the couch. :o)
